Théo Hernandez, born October 6, 1997, in Marseille, is a French international footballer who plays as a left-back at AC Milan. He is the son of Jean-François Hernandez and the younger brother of Lucas, also a French international.

After debuting at Rayo Majadahonda, Théo Hernandez trained at Atlético Madrid. After the 2015-2016 season spent with the reserve team, the defender was loaned to Deportivo Alavés with whom he made his professional debut and was a finalist in the 2016-2017 Copa del Rey. His performances saw him recruited by Real Madrid where he expanded his record with a Spanish Super Cup, a Club World Cup, and a Champions League. Théo Hernandez, born on October 6, 1997, in Marseille, is the son of Jean-François Hernandez, a French professional footballer of Spanish origin born in Tours in 1969, and Laurence Py. In 2000, Theo Hernandez moved with his mother and brother, Lucas, to Spain while his father was playing in the Spanish league.

Club Career

Debut at Atlético and loan to Alavés

Théo made his first-team debut on August 30, 2015, against CD Puerta Bonita (a 4-3 away win). On February 3, 2016, of the following year, he renewed his contract. Théo played with Atlético de Madrid B, the reserve team, during the 2015-2016 season.

Courted by Lyon or FC Barcelona during the summer of 2016, the young man once again extended his contract with his club until 2021. Immediately after, he was loaned to Deportivo Alavés for a period of one year. He made his professional debut against Sporting de Gijón (0-0 draw) at home on August 28, 2016. On May 7, 2017, he scored the first goal of his professional career against Athletic Bilbao aged just 19, 7 months, and 1 day. At the end of the month, he is part of the revelation team of the Spanish championship, established by UEFA. On May 27, 2017, he equalized against FC Barcelona in the King’s Cup final from a free-kick, but could not prevent the 3-1 defeat at the Vicente-Calderón stadium.

Pursuit at Real Madrid

On July 5, 2017, he was recruited for €25 million by Real Madrid7 and signed a six-year contract. His team won the 2017 European Super Cup against Manchester United without Theo coming into play. Remained on the bench in the first leg (1-3 victory), Theo played his first match with Real on August 16, 2017, replacing Marco Asensio in the 75th minute of the second leg of the Supercop de España. Confirmation at AC Milan

On July 6, 2019, Théo Hernandez signed up for AC Milan, signing a five-year contract. The cost of the transfer is estimated at twenty million euros. On September 21, 2019, he played his first match in the Milan derby, replacing Rodriguez in the 71st minute. The following September 26, he was established for the first time with the Rossoneri, against Torino (2-1 defeat). He scored his first goal in Serie A on October 5, 2019, against Genoa. While his performances during his first months are considered mixed under the direction of Marco Giampaolo, the arrival of Stefano Pioli allows him to gain momentum and become a key element of the reds and blacks.

Youth Selections

Théo Hernandez is selected in the France U18, U19 and U20 teams.

In 2015, Ludovic Batelli, who will be his coach from under 18 to under 20, is looking in vain for a left-handed central defender to stabilize his France U18 team. Theo’s entourage contacts him and praises the latter’s versatility, capable of playing on the left side or on the axis. “He had achieved a dazzling tournament in Korea with the U18s in 2015. He brought a lot of things down the hall,” recalls Batelli at the start of 2020.

In the summer of 2016, Hernandez did not participate in the Euro U19, which France won, retained by Diego Simeone, his coach from Atlético Madrid. The defender has nine caps in the France U19 team.

At the beginning of 2017, Théo was called up for the U20 World Cup with France. But, once again, his club Deportivo Alavés, where he is on loan and which is playing in the Copa del Rey final, does not release him.

Summoned by Sylvain Ripoll to the France U23 team on May 31, 2017, Théo did not show up for the meeting, being on vacation in Marbella. Théo then declares: “I made a mistake when I was young. But it was also not clear at all levels. We will also say that I was not pushed to go there, maybe some people hoped that I would choose Spain”. Officially, the French Football Federation (FFF) does not sanction him but the coach does not call him back.

On August 26, 2021, Théo Hernandez was selected for France A team by Didier Deschamps, to play the matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ukraine, and Finland, counting for the qualifications for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. On September 8, 2021, he had his first start against Finland and played the entire match (2-0 victory).

A month after his first appearance with the Blues, Théo played his second international match on October 7, 2021, in the semi-final of the 2020-2021 Nations League against Belgium. The French side begins the meeting alongside his brother Lucas, making them the first titular brothers in the France team since Jean and Lucien Laurent in 1932, 89 years after. Led 2-0 at half-time, France came back to 2-2, then Théo Hernandez scored his first French goal and gave Les Bleus qualification in the 90th minute with a cross-shot at the entrance to the area. On October 10, in the final against Spain, in the 80th minute, with the two teams tied at 1-1, he launched Kylian Mbappé into the depths at the edge of offside, and the latter got away. will score the disputed goal notes 1 of the victory validated using the VAR.
