Tom Cairney Football Career
Here, we take a closer look at his Football career so far.
Tom Cairney Club Career
Starting career
At age 16, Cairney was told he was too little and was kicked out of the Leeds United junior system. Since the age of seven, he had been a member of the club. He commented when thinking back on his time at Leeds United: “Since I was with Leeds from the age of seven to 16, which was a significant portion of my life, I have to say that it broke me a lot.
I was skipping days from school to go there three to four times a week, and it was clear that my parents had invested a lot of time and effort as well. Being let go at the age of 16 made one think, “Oh no, after all that effort.” However, I was adamant that I would not stop there. When I arrived in Hull, they gave me a YTS since they obviously noticed something.
And between the ages of 16 and 18, I rapidly gained height before returning to my footballing prowess. If you put out my journey from being released at age 16 to making my Premier League debut, you wouldn’t believe it. I owe a lot to Phil Brown, the manager of Hull at the time, for his belief in me.
When they saw me competing in the Premier League, I imagine the Leeds academy personnel must have been a little taken aback! Although I don’t know what happened to them, I believe they may have received a warning!”
Hull City
When Hull City hired Cairney in 2007 on a youth contract, they offered him a chance. Hull’s Young Player of the Year for the 2008–09 campaign was Cairney. He agreed to a two-year contract with the team in June 2009 to do this.
On July 31, 2009, in Beijing, he participated for Hull versus Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League Asia Trophy championship match. On August 25, 2009, he made his first-team debut against Southend United in the League Cup. He scored the game’s first goal with a long-range curling shot as Hull defeated Southend 3-1.
He then played in a 2-2 tie against Wolverhampton Wanderers on January 30, 2010, to earn his Premier League debut. In a 5-1 loss against Everton on March 7, 2010, Cairney scored his first league goal for Hull with an excellent strike from outside the box. On March 31, 2010, Cairney re-signed a three-year contract with the team. He made a total of 14 appearances and scored once for the squad after being handed a first-team chance later in the season.
At the start of the 2012–13 campaign, Cairney played a crucial part in a 3-2 loss to Doncaster Rovers in the League Cup second round on August 28, 2012, when he assisted on two of Hull City’s goals. However, he suffered a severe knee injury during the game as a result of James Husband of Doncaster’s careless tackle during a League Cup encounter.
Later, Steve Bruce called the test a “horror tackle.” On December 8, 2012, Cairney regained his fitness after missing more than three months due to injury, and he sat on the bench as Hull defeated Watford away. The next week, against Huddersfield at home, Cairney made his comeback, replacing teammate Corry Evans in the 63rd minute.
On January 5, 2013, he assisted Nick Proschwitz’s goal against Leyton Orient in the FA Cup third round. The result was a 1-1 tie that necessitated a replay. He scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory to advance his team to the fourth round in the rematch in the third round. Cairney went on to make a total of 14 appearances and score once for the team as Hull City was promoted to the Premier League, despite playing less and spending the rest of the season on the substitute bench.
Burnley Rovers
As a 77th-minute replacement for Alex Marrow in a 1-1 draw against Derby County, he made his debut. Two days later, in an exciting League Cup match against Carlisle United, Cairney made his club debut in full. He scored one goal and provided one assist before receiving his first career red card for two bookable infractions.
On August 24, Cairney opened his Championship account for Blackburn by tying the score in the club’s 5-2 triumph over Barnsley. Cairney rapidly made an impact at Blackburn Rovers and established himself in the first team. In a 2-1 victory over Leeds United on January 1, 2014, he then assisted on two goals.
After a productive first half of the season on loan, his move to Blackburn was made permanent the next day, on January 2. “I’m very thrilled to sign permanently — that was my goal when I came on loan in August,” Cairney said. Cairney scored his second league goal for Blackburn Rovers on January 28, 2014, against Barnsley, following the completion of this permanent contract.
He was recognized as the outstanding performer for January by the regional publication Lancashire Telegraph. On the other hand, after missing time with an ankle injury that he suffered against Reading, he scored and assisted in a 3-3 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion on April 1 of that year. Cairney returned to the first team despite picking up another injury, scoring twice more against Charlton Athletic and Wigan Athletic.
When Cairney was chosen as the 2013–14 Player of the Year by the public, his productive season came to an end. At the conclusion of the 2013–14 campaign, Cairney had scored six goals in 40 total appearances.
Cairney had a strong start to the 2014–15 campaign, scoring twice in the first month of the campaign against Cardiff City and Norwich City (for which he was awarded the club’s Goal of the Season). He continued to play central midfield for the team, earning him a nomination for August’s Player of the Month award. Igor Vetokele of Charlton won the award, though.
On November 22, 2014, in a 2-1 victory over Leeds United, Cairney was dismissed for receiving a second caution. Then, soon after completing his punishment, he hurt his ankle. He didn’t come back from the first team, where he played 69 minutes in a 2-1 loss to Bolton Wanderers, until December 26th, 2014.
After making his way back to the first team, Cairney kept his spot for the remainder of the season, although he struggled to score goals because, as he admitted, his second season with the squad had grown challenging. He went eight months without scoring until finally netting his third goal of the year on April 4, 2015, in a 3-3 draw with Leeds United.
Cairney scored three goals in a total of 45 appearances this season despite missing three games in the 2014–15 campaign due to injury. He was the club’s fan favourite while he was playing for Blackburn Rovers.
Fulham
Cairney signed a four-year contract with Fulham on June 26, 2015, for an undisclosed sum. According to reports, Cairney’s relocation cost £3 million. Bryan Ruiz, who left the team during the summer transfer window, was replaced with Cairney in the number 10 jersey for the upcoming season.
Cairney made his Fulham debut in a 1-1 tie with Cardiff City, where he started and played the entire game. In a subsequent game on August 15, 2015, he scored his first goal for the team in a 2-1 loss at home to Brighton & Hove Albion.
Four days later, on August 19, 2015, he scored again in a 2-1 loss to Hull City. He received the club’s Man of the Match honors despite the loss. He won August’s Goal of the Month award for his strike against Brighton & Hove Albion. On September 19, 2015, he scored once again in a 3-2 loss to Sheffield Wednesday.
On September 29, 2015, in a 3-0 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers, Cairney was dismissed for “a two-footed tackle” on Adam Le Fondre. Following a three-match suspension, he was reinstated to the first team and spent the majority of the season on the right side of midfield. Cairney then snapped his four-month goal drought on February 13, 2016, when he scored and assisted on a goal in a 3-1 victory over Queens Park Rangers, his rivals.
He was awarded Man of the Match after the game. He was named the Championship Player of the Month for February after adding three additional goals to his total, including a double in a 3-0 victory over Charlton Athletic on February 20, 2016, as a result of his outstanding play all month long. Cairney scored the game’s lone goal in the final match of the season, leading his team to a 1-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers.
Cairney made a total of 42 appearances in all competitions, scoring 8 goals despite missing two games later in the season. He came in second place to Ross McCormack for the club’s Player of the Season during his first season there. He became the focus of the Fulham fans’ song, “Ain’t nobody like Tom Cairney,” throughout the season.
