Wellington Regional Stadium, also known as the Westpac Stadium, is a multi-purpose stadium in Wellington, New Zealand. It is located in the suburb of Newtown and is home to the Wellington Lions, a professional rugby team, and the Wellington Phoenix, a professional football (soccer) team. The stadium has a seating capacity of 34,500 and is known for its distinctive “cake tin” design, with the roof resembling a large steel container. In addition to sporting events, the Wellington Regional Stadium has also hosted concerts and other events.
The stadium was built in 1999 by Fletcher Construction and is situated close to major transport facilities (such as Wellington railway station) one kilometer (0.62 mi) north of the CBD. It was built on railway land reclaimed from the sea, which exceeded the needs.
The stadium also serves as a large-capacity concert venue and is known colloquially as “The Cake Tin”.

Wellington Regional Stadium History
The stadium was built in 1999 by Fletcher Construction and was the first bowling stadium built in New Zealand. It was built to replace Athletic Park, which was no longer considered suitable for international events due to its location and state of disrepair. The stadium also built to provide a larger capacity venue for One Day International cricket matches, due to the Basin Reserve ground losing those matches to larger stadiums in other parts of the country.
Naming rights
The Westpac Trust, later known simply as Westpac, signed on to be the stadium’s name sponsor when it opened in 2000. It continued that relationship for twenty years before it ended on December 31, 2019.
On 22 August 2019, it was announced that Sky had signed a six-year deal to take over as the name sponsor of the stadium from 1 January 2020.
