Ali Riley Early Life

Riley was born in Los Angeles, California, to John Graham Riley and Beverly Fong Lowe. He attended Pacific Palisades at St. Matthew’s Parish School and in North Hollywood, California, at Harvard-Westlake School. During her final year of high school, she was named football team captain.

She was also named Mission League Offensive MVP twice and to the first team of the San Fernando Valley twice. As a senior, she helped lead the Wolverines to the Southern Section Division I final in 2006 and was named to the All-CIF Southern Section Division I first team. Riley also played football for the neighbourhood teams LA Breakers FC (formerly Westside Breakers) and Real SoCal (formerly known as SoCal United).

University of Stanford

Riley went to college at Stanford and played baseball for the Stanford Cardinal from 2006 to 2009. During her first year of college, she played 18 games and started 15 of them. She was a forward, scoring four goals and setting up two more. She started in fourteen of the sixteen games she played as a junior.

Gold Pride FC

In January 2010, FC Gold Pride picked Riley with the 10th in the first round of the 2010 WPS Draught. She played as a right wing-back for the New Zealand Women’s National Team. However, she professionally played as a left wing-back and helped FC Gold Pride win the WPS title in 2010. Riley got the award for the WPS Rookie of the Year.

Flash from Western New York

Riley signed with Western New York Flash for the 2011 season after FC Gold Pride couldn’t find enough money to keep him on.

Riley was a candidate for Defender of the Year in 2011. This was the year the Flash won the league season title and the 2011 WPS Championship.

LdB FC Malmo/FC Rosengård

Ali Riley returned to the United States on February 10, 2020, and signed a one-year deal with the Orlando Pride. There was an option for an extra year. But on June 22, 2020, the team pulled out of the event because both players and staff had tested positive for COVID-19.

Riley played for New Zealand in the 2006 Women’s U-20 World Cup finals. She played for New Zealand at the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup finals in China, where they lost to Brazil (0–5), Denmark (0–2), and China (0–0). Her first game as an adult was a 0–5 loss to Australia on February 6, 2007.

Riley also played every minute for New Zealand at the 2008 Summer Olympics, where they tied with Japan (2–2) before losing to Norway (0–1) and the United States (0–4). Riley got her first goal for her country in the final of the OFC Women’s Nations Cup, which New Zealand won 11–0 over Papua New Guinea. This helped New Zealand qualify for the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

On June 27, 2011, Riley played in her 50th A-international match, New Zealand’s first group-stage match at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup. They played Japan and lost 2-1. In the last few seconds of extra time against Mexico, she helped set up the goal that tied the game and gave the Football Ferns their first point in a World Cup final.

Riley played every minute of the Football Ferns’ four games at the 2012 Olympics. The Ferns lost 0–1 to Great Britain and Brazil in the opening round but won 3–1 against Cameroon. This was the first time a football team from New Zealand won at the Olympics. With the win, the Ferns moved on to the next round based on the number of goals they scored.
