Becky Sauerbrunn Early Life

Becky, Grant, and Adam Sauerbrunn were reared in St. Louis, Missouri, by Jane and Scott Sauerbrunn. Her brothers inspired her to be strong and independent.

Sauerbrunn joined the JB Marine Soccer Club at age 12 and won four Missouri State Cups and a Midwest Regional Championship in 2000.

Sauerbrunn captained the Ladue High School soccer team as a sweeper and central midfielder. Her senior season saw 21 goals and 19 assists. She earned 2003 Missouri Gatorade Player of the Year, 2002 Parade All-American, 2001 NSCAA Young All-American, and 2002 NSCAA Adidas (U-17) All-American.

2003–2007, UVA

Sauerbrunn played for the University of Virginia Cavaliers women’s football team from 2003 to 2007. Sauerbrunn started all 21 games for the Cavaliers in 2003, making two assists in 1,970 minutes. Her first career assist came against Wake Forest on October 11. Virginia faced William & Mary in the first round of the 2003 NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament on November 14. Virginia progressed to the second round on penalties.

Virginia lost to Villanova in the second round on November 16 in penalty kicks, ending their tournament run. Sauerbrunn was awarded ACC Freshman of the Year for 2003 and garnered NSCAA All-Region, All-American First Team, All-ACC Second Team, and All-Freshman Team honours. The 2004 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Championships in Thailand prevented Sauerbrunn from playing in 2004.

Sauerbrunn started all 25 Cavaliers games in 2005, scoring her first career goal on September 16 against St. Bonaventure. Virginia defeated Liberty 7–1 in the opening round of the 2005 NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament on November 11.

Virginia advanced 4–0. Virginia played Tennessee on November 13. Virginia advanced 3–0. Virginia beat CS Fullerton 2–1 in the third round. Virginia lost to UCLA in the quarterfinals on November 25.  Sauerbrunn was chosen NSCAA All-Region, All-ACC Second Team, and ACC All-Academic Team after the 2005 season.

In 2006, Sauerbrunn started all 21 games for the Cavaliers and helped Virginia reach the third round of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament, where they lost to Texas A&M on November 17.  After the season, she was named to the ACC All-Academic Team, NSCAA All-Region, All-ACC First Team, and NSCAA All-American Second Team.

Sauerbrunn started all 23 Cavaliers games in 2007. Sauerbrunn earned NSCAA All-Region, All-American First Team, and All-ACC First Team honours after the 2007 season when she helped Virginia reach the third round of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship, where they fell to UCLA in overtime on November 23. She was Academic All-American, ACC All-Tournament, and ACC All-Academic. She was NSCAA Scholar-Athlete and ACC Player of the Year.

Renegades, 2005

Sauerbrunn played with the Boston Renegades in the W-League in 2005. [6] Because it was an open league, collegiate athletes could play in the summer and maintain eligibility. [15] She made her debut on May 20, 2005, against the Long Island Riders.

Richmond Kickers Destiny, 2006–2007

Sauerbrunn played 24 games and 2,137 minutes with Richmond Kickers Destiny in the W-League in 2006 and 2007. She scored three goals despite being a defensive player.

Freedom, 2008–2009

Sauerbrunn played for the 2008 W-League Washington Freedom.

In 2009, the Washington Freedom joined the new Women’s Professional Soccer League. On October 6, 2008, Sauerbrunn was picked third overall in the first round of the 2008 WPS General Draft, which assigned the WPS rights of international and domestic players to WPS teams for the 2009 season. She made her first appearance for the team on March 29, 2009, in a match against the Los Angeles Sol. She started all 20 regular season games for the Freedom and the team’s one playoff match. She scored one goal during the season.

Røa IL, 2009

After the 2009 season with the Washington Freedom, Sauerbrunn played for Røa IL in Toppserien, Norway’s top women’s professional league, for three months. She made her first appearance for the team on September 26, 2009, against Kattem IL, playing all 90 minutes and scoring a goal in the 13th minute. She made five appearances in the domestic league. Sauerbrunn played in two rounds of the UEFA Women’s Champions League against Everton and Zvezda 2005 Perm, helping Røa reach the quarterfinals.

Freedom, 2010.

Sauerbrunn rejoined the Freedom for WPS 2010. The Freedom finished fourth in the league and progressed to the playoffs, facing the Philadelphia Independence in the first round on September 19. [20] She played in all 24 regular season games. The Freedom lost 1–0 after Sauerbrunn started and played 120 minutes.

magicJack, 2011

On December 2, 2010, Dan Borislow bought the Washington Freedom, changed its name to magicJack, and moved the team to Boca Raton, Florida for the 2011 season. Sauerbrunn remained with the team after the change and started in the team’s first game under the new name, a 1–0 win over the Boston Breakers.

She made 13 total appearances for the team in the regular season. magicJack finished the season ranked third in the league and a playoff qualifier. magicJack advanced 3–1 to the semifinals. Sauerbrunn started MagicJack’s playoff loss against Philadelphia Independence, 2–0.

On October 25, 2011, the WPS Board of Governors voted to cancel the magicJack franchise, charging Borislow with “unprofessional and insulting conduct of his players to failing to pay his bills.” All players were released and became free agents on November 9, 2011.

2012 Sky Blue FC

Sauerbrunn joined Sky Blue FC for 2012. The WPS Board of Governors suspended the 2012 season on January 30, 2012, due to a legal disagreement with Borislow over MagicJack’s termination. The league dissolved in May of that year.

D.C. 2012, United Women

Sauerbrunn joined D.C. in March 2012 after WPS was suspended. United Women in the 2012 W-League. She helped the team finish first in the Eastern Conference but was unable to play in any playoff matches owing to her national team responsibilities at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

FCKC, 2013–2017

The NWSL Player Allocation, which dispersed US, Canadian, and Mexican national team players to NWSL teams, allocated Sauerbrunn to FC Kansas City on January 11, 2013. She, Nicole Barnhart, and Lauren Holiday were assigned to FC Kansas City from the USWNT.

Sauerbrunn was selected co-captain with Holiday for the 2013 season. She made her debut in the team’s season opener against the Portland Thorns on April 14, 2013, starting all 19 games. She helped Kansas City finish second in the league behind the Western New York Flash.

Sauerbrunn played 11 games for FC Kansas City in 2015, missing nine regular season games due to national team obligations at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. She helped Kansas City finish third in the league and advance to the playoffs. She played all 90 minutes of the semifinal match against Chicago Red Stars on September 13, a 3–0 win for Kansas City. She then helped Kansas City defeat Seattle Reign in the championship match.

Utah Royals FC 2018–2019

As FCKC folded, her rights were transferred to Utah. Sauerbrunn was named to the NWSL Team of the Month for March, April, May, and June, the NWSL Best XI for the sixth straight season, and a finalist for Defender of the Year.

U-16 team

Sauerbrunn played for the US U-16 squad from 2000 to 2002. Sauerbrunn played for the U-16 national team in the 2001 United States Amateur Soccer Festival from July 29 to August 5. She played in a match against an older East Region Team on July 30 that ended in a 0–0 draw and a match against the West Region Team on August 1 that ended in a 5–1 win. Sauerbrunn was first called up to the US women’s national team for a six-day training camp at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California from January 3 to 8, 2008.
