About Blackburn Rovers

Blackburn Rovers Football Club is a professional football club, based in Blackburn, Lancashire, England, that competes in the EFL Championship, the second tier of the English football league system. They have played home games at Ewood Park since 1890. The club’s motto is “Arte et Labore”, which means “With skill and hard work” in Latin. They have a longstanding rivalry with nearby club Burnley, with whom they contest the East Lancashire derby.

The club was established in 1875 and became a founder member of the Football League in 1888. They won five FA Cup finals in the 19th century: 1884, 1885, 1886, 1890, and 1891. The team was crowned champions of the English League in 1911–12 and 1913–14, then won a sixth FA Cup in 1928.

However, they were relegated for the first time in 1936, although they returned to the top flight as Second Division champions in 1938–39. Relegated in 1948, Rovers secured promotion again in 1957–58, although they would be relegated in 1966 and again in 1971. Blackburn won the Third Division title in 1974–75 and was promoted again in 1979–80 after suffering relegation the year previous. They won the Full Members’ Cup in 1987.

In 1992 Rovers achieved promotion to the new Premier League via the play-offs; this achievement came a year after it was taken over by local businessman Jack Walker, who installed Kenny Dalglish as manager. In 1994-1995 Rovers became Premier League champions.

Relegated just four seasons after being crowned champions, they secured promotion at the end of the 2000–01 season and won the League Cup in 2002. This time they spent eleven consecutive seasons in the Premier League, though they were relegated in 2012 and again to the third tier in 2017. Blackburn secured promotion from League One at the end of the 2017–18 season.

Ewood Park Home Stadium of Blackburn Rovers

Ewood Park is quite impressive, having had three large new stands built during the 1990s. These stands are at both ends and on one side of the ground. They are the same height and more or less similar in design, have two levels, have a row of executive boxes, and have similar ceilings.

The ends are particularly attractive, both with large lower levels. The only downside is the open corners, although there is a giant screen in one corner on the away side, showing an excellent pre-game show and, among other things, the teams coming out of the changing rooms and onto the pitch. There is also an electric scoreboard at the Bryan Douglas Darwen End of the ground.

The RFS Riverside Stand is the only undeveloped stand, which spans one side of the pitch. This is a smaller, single-tier booth and isn’t as easy on the eyes as its more modern counterparts. In fact, it looks older than what opened in 1988. It contains a good number of support pillars and is partly covered (at the rear).

Just to highlight how much the ground has changed, this was at one time the ‘best’ stand in Ewood Park. Another interesting feature of the ground is the fact that the pitch is elevated. This means that players have to run up a small slope while taking throw-ins and corners. Outside the stadium, behind the Ronnie Clayton Blackburn End, is a statue of the club’s former owner, Jack Walker.
