Club Career

Brentford

Youth years (2012–2016)

Chris Mepham joined the Brentford academy in 2012 after the head of academy recruitment at the organization noticed him during a brief cameo for North Greenford United’s reserve squad. At the age of 16, Mepham made three appearances for the youth squad before agreeing to a scholarship in June 2014.

Mepham signed his first professional contract to join the club’s development squad on February 2, 2016, and by the time his scholarship was over, he had made 43 appearances and two goals for the young team.

Breakthrough (2016–2019)

Chris Mepham was elevated to the first team roster on August 30, 2017, following the departure of center-back Harlee Dean, and he also signed a new five-year contract. On September 19, 2017, he made his first start for the team in a 3-1 loss against Norwich City in the third round of the EFL Cup.

He gave away the penalty that resulted in the Canaries’ opening goal. Following inconsistent appearances during the autumn, Mepham was given a run in the team from the Christmas season until the beginning of February 2018 due to John Egan’s head injury in December.

AFC Bournemouth

Mepham committed to a long-term deal with Premier League club AFC Bournemouth on January 22, 2019, for an undisclosed price that was reported as around £12 million. He joined the team eight days later, replacing Junior Stanislas late in a 4-0 victory over Chelsea.

Due to Steve Cook’s injury, he was still frequently chosen to play in the back line at Bournemouth. Mepham played a total of 13 times in the Premier League for Bournemouth during the 2018–19 season.

International career

He was selected for the Wales U20 team for the 2017 Toulon Tournament and played in one match, a 2-2 draw with Ivory Coast in the group stage on June 5, 2017.

On September 2, 2017, he started his UEFA U21 Championship qualification match against Switzerland and made his U21 debut. Six weeks later, in a 0-0 qualifying match with Romania, Mepham led the U21 team for the first time.
