At age 14, Alvarez tried out for the youth team of Pachuca, though Alvarez did not make the team due to his short stature. Club Career
América
In 2014, aged 16 Alvarez joined the youth club of Club America as a player for the team for under-17s. The following year, playing for the team’s under-17 players, Alvarez was promoted to America’s second division team. In August 2016, the first team manager Ignacio Ambriz gave Alvarez his first opportunity to play, sitting on the bench during America’s league week five game with Monarcas Morelia, using the jersey number 282.
Ajax
On the 19th of July, 2019, Dutch club Ajax announced an agreement with Club America to sign Alvarez for a five-year deal that is subject to the passing of a medical exam, for the reported sum of $17 million. He completed his medical and was officially introduced on the 22nd of July. He was given shirt number 4 which was subsequently discarded due to Matthijs de Ligt’s departure. The club announced a formal transfer amount that was EUR15 million. On August 17, Alvarez made his competitive debut for Ajax as a substitute in the 74th minute during the team’s victory in the league 4-1 over VVV-Venlo.

Along with Alejandro Mayorga, Alvarez was identified as a practice squad member for the Confederations Cup team. He was selected to play in the Gold Cup, making him the youngest player on the squad.
The roster consisted largely of players who were not playing since the team was in Russia participating in the Confederations Cup. On the 17th of July, during the final match of the stage for group play with Curacao, Alvarez scored his first goal for Mexico’s national team during their victory 2-0, becoming one of the oldest Mexican athletes to have scored a goal during an official Gold Cup tournament at 19 years old.
