It is the home of Brighton & Hove Albion F.C., an English football club that currently plays in the Premier League. The stadium has a seating capacity of 30,750 and was opened in 2011. It is located about five miles east of Brighton city center, and is easily accessible by public transportation.

It serves as the home of Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion and was handed over to the club by the developers on 31 May 2011. The first competitive match played at the stadium was the 2010–11 Senior Cup season final of Sussex between Brighton and Eastbourne Borough on 16 July 2011. The first league game was against Doncaster Rovers, who were also the opponents in the last game played at Brighton’s old stadium, the Goldstone Ground, 14 years earlier.

Falmer Stadium hosted Premier League football for the first time in August 2017, following Albion’s promotion at the end of the 2016–17 season.

The stadium was designed to allow the celebration of other sports and events. It hosted some matches of the 2015 Rugby World Cup and the 2022 UEFA Women’s Euro Cup.

Falmer Stadium History

Opening

The stadium officially opened on 30 July 2011 and hosted a friendly match against then-Brighton manager Gus Poyet’s former club Tottenham Hotspur with the home side narrowly losing 3–2. The first competitive match took place on 6 August 2011, when Brighton beat Doncaster Rovers 2-1, after being 1-0 down.

Construction

On November 27, 2008, the Buckingham Group signed the contract to build the new stadium and began preparation work on the site on December 17. The stadium is set three stories down into the ground. During its construction, 138,000 cubic meters of limestone were excavated and placed in the field on the south side of Village Way. It has been estimated that this will prevent 22,000 truck trips from taking the chalk to the off-site landfill.

Construction on the site began on December 17, 2008, and was completed in May 2011. The stadium was designed with the potential for expansion, and plans to increase capacity were put in place.

The stadium was designed by London-based architects, KSS. The capacity of the stadium has been expanded, with the installation of an additional seating level above the East Stand (Family Stand), bringing the capacity to around 30,000 seats. The deal with American Express Europe, Brighton and Hove’s largest private sector employer, confirming the naming rights to the stadium, was announced on 22 June 2010.
