Gabriel Barbosa Club Career

Early career

Born in São Bernardo do Campo, São Paulo, Gabriel joined the Santos FC youth team in 2004, at the age of 8; his prolific goalscoring with the club’s youth teams led to him earning the nickname Gabigol. On September 25, 2012, he signed a professional contract, with a termination clause of 50 million euros, and made his debut with the first team on January 17 of the following year, in a friendly match against Grêmio Barueri.


On May 26, 2013, Gabriel made his league debut, aged just 16, in a 0-0 draw against Flamengo. He scored his first professional goal on August 22, scoring the only goal of the game in a home win against Grêmio, for the year’s Copa do Brasil.

On February 1, 2014, Gabriel scored a brace and Santos’ 12,000th goal in a 5-1 victory against Botafogo-SP, for that year’s Paulista Championship. He finished the tournament with seven goals, as Peixe finished second.

Gabriel scored his first goal in Serie A on 20 April 2014, scoring his team’s only goal in a 1–1 home draw against Sport Recife. He signed a new five-year contract with the club on September 23 and finished the season with 21 goals, ten more than the spender Leandro Damião.


On 27 August 2016, after being warmly welcomed by Inter fans once they landed in Milan the day before, Gabriel signed for Inter Milan for a five-year contract worth €29.5 million.

On September 22, 2016, the club officially presented Gabigol as an Inter player at the Pirelli auditorium with a media spectacle: the striker entered the press room after a video showing him under the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro and then on the rooftops of Milan. , clearly evoking the spot that Inter had made to present Il Fenomeno Ronaldo in the past.

On January 25, 2018, Gabriel’s former club, Santos, announced that he had reached an agreement with Inter for his return to the club on a one-year loan. He made his debut for the club on February 11, starting and scoring the goal for his team. second in the 2-2 away draw against Ferroviária.

On January 11, 2019, Flamengo officially announced an agreement with Inter Milan to sign Gabriel on loan until December 31, 2019.

Gabriel made his debut for Flamengo on January 23, 2019, in a 1-1 Campeonato Carioca draw against Resende. He started the game and played all 90 minutes. He scored his first goal for Flamengo on February 24, 2019, in a 4-1 win against Americano, this was the first match of a six-game streak that includes goals in Copa Libertadores matches against San José and LDU. Quito and a double against Portuguesa (RJ) and Madureira in the Carioca Championship.
