Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (Indonesian: Stadion Utama Gelora Bung Karno; literally “Bung Karno Sports Arena Main Stadium”), formerly Senayan Main Stadium and Gelora Senayan Main Stadium, is a multi-purpose stadium located in the Gelora Bung Karno center. Sports complex in downtown Jakarta, Indonesia. It is mostly used for football matches. The stadium is named after Sukarno, the then President of Indonesia, who came up with the idea of building the sports complex.

Gelora Bung Karno Stadium History

Construction began on February 8, 1960, and was completed on July 21, 1962, in time to host the Asian Games the following month. It was partly built with money from a special loan from the Soviet Union, which is now called Russia.

The stadium’s original capacity of 110,000 was reduced to 88,306 as a result of renovations for the 2007 AFC Asian Cup. The stadium is known for its ring-shaped façade, the temu gelang also called the giant ring, which was designed to protect spectators from the sun and increase the grandeur of the stadium.
