Football Career

Here, we take a closer look at her Football career so far.

Grace Moloney Club Career

During the 2015 FA WSL season, Moloney played for Reading in the second level, FA WSL 2. She helped the team win the league, and before the 2016 season in the FAWSL 1, she signed a professional deal with the team.

After Reading signed Mary Earps, Moloney could mostly only play in the FA Women’s League Cup. Even though she got along well with Earps, Moloney was upset about being dropped. In June 2016, she joined Aston Villa on loan.

International career

Youth

Moloney was essential to the Republic of Ireland U-17 team in 2010. It finished second in the UEFA Women’s Under-17 Championship and made it to the quarterfinals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. She was named 2011 Under-19 Women’s International Player of the Year at the FAI International Football Awards.

Senior

Moloney joined the senior Republic of Ireland women’s national football team for the first time in August 2010, when they played the Netherlands in a friendly. They then played Russia and Israel in games to prepare for the 2011 FIFA World Cup. She joined the senior team again as the third goalie for the 2014 Cyprus Cup, but she had to drop out at the last minute because she hurt her back while training with Reading.

On May 5, 2014, Susan Ronan, the manager of the Republic of Ireland women’s national football team, put Moloney in a test group for a friendly against the Basque Country. Moloney took over for Eve Badana at halftime and played the rest of Ireland’s 2-0 loss to Azpeitia, which was not a full international match.

Moloney got her first professional cap at the 2016 Cyprus Cup. She played the whole game in Ireland’s first game, a 2-0 loss to Austria. Even though Ireland lost, the Football Association of Ireland’s website praised Moloney’s “assured performance,” Moloney herself said she was proud and happy to have fulfilled a longtime goal of playing for Ireland at the senior level.

In August 2016, Ronan asked Moloney to join a young, primarily home-based senior team going to Wales for a training camp. She played in the first of two challenge games against Wales, which ended in a 0-0 tie at Newport’s Rodney Parade.

Colin Bell took over as Ireland’s coach when Sue Ronan left in February 2017. He quickly chose Marie Hourihan to replace Emma Byrne as the long-term goalkeeper because he thought Moloney was too small. Moloney replaced Hourihan at halftime of Ireland’s 4–0 friendly loss to Poland in Ostróda on October 9, 2018.

Moloney’s first game was a crucial qualifier for the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 against Germany on December 1, 2020, at Tallaght Stadium. She won the trust of coach Vera Pauw because of how well she played for her club team, Reading. Even though Ireland lost 3–1, Pauw said Moloney did a “fantastic” job.
