Club Career

Groningen

Virgil van Dijk initially struggled to get into Groningen’s first-team as the club’s management believed that he had become “overtired” after extensive playing time in Willem II’s academy and reserve teams. He made his debut with the club on May 1 2011 when he was brought on in the 72nd minute as a substitute for Petter Andersson in a 4-2 win against ADO Den Haag. On the 29th of May, in the same fixture He made his first appearance with Groningen with his debut professional goal scoring twice during a 5-1 win the UEFA Europa League play-off match.

In this 2011-12 Eredivisie year, Virgil van Dijk made 23 games in the league with the Eredivisie team. He scored his first goal in the regular season during the club’s 6-0 win against Feyenoord on the 30th of October, 2011. Van Dijk had a personal setback in the tournament but, shortly after the 20th birthday, he was admitted to the hospital suffering from peritonitis and kidney poisoning. Van Dijk later revealed that was close to dying due to the medical crisis, and the hospital even went to the extent of asking for his signature on the “sort of will” in the event of his death.

Celtic

On June 21, 2013 Van Dijk signed with Celtic for an amount of PS2.6 million and a four-year agreement with an additional 10% selling-on fee for Groningen. Virgil van Dijk made his debut 17 August, in place of Efe Ambrose in the final 13 minutes of the 2 – 0 Scottish Premiership win over Aberdeen at Pittodrie Stadium. International career

Virgil van Dijk made his international debut for the Netherlands in a 2-1 win against Kazakhstan on October 10, 2015. This was in a UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying match. Ronald Koeman, his manager, gave Van Dijk the captaincy of the Netherlands. His first match as captain was a friendly loss to England by 1-0 the day after. 

He scored his first international goal on 26 March to complete a 3-0 victory over European champions Portugal at Stade de Geneve. He scored in a 3-0 victory over 2014 World Cup Champions Germany in the UEFA Nations League on 13 October. 

He also scored the equalizer in his next match against Germany. This was after Dwight Lodeweges, assistant coach, sent him a short note in a break with the request that he play forward in the final minutes of the match. 

This goal allowed the Netherlands to win the Nations League group phase. Later, he captained his country to victory against Portugal in the final. Virgil van Dijk decided to withdraw from the UEFA Euro 2020 postponement in May 2021 to allow him to rest after sustaining a long-term injury sustained in October 2020.
