After having failed to play right-back in his previous appearances, Van Dijk was promoted to the central defensive position at age 17, when he had grown in height by 18 centimeters. 

Willem II’s reserve manager Edwin Hermans believed that Van Dijk had “too few limitations” which prevented him from getting into the first team despite his physical growth and change in position. He was discovered by Martin Koeman (an ex-Dutch international footballer) in 2010. Club Career

Groningen

Virgil van Dijk initially struggled to get into Groningen’s first-team as the club’s management believed that he had become “overtired” after extensive playing time in Willem II’s academy and reserve teams. He made his debut with the club on May 1 2011 when he was brought on in the 72nd minute as a substitute for Petter Andersson in a 4-2 win against ADO Den Haag. On the 29th of May, in the same fixture He made his first appearance with Groningen with his debut professional goal scoring twice during a 5-1 win the UEFA Europa League play-off match.

In this 2011-12 Eredivisie year, Virgil van Dijk made 23 games in the league with the Eredivisie team. He scored his first goal in the regular season during the club’s 6-0 win against Feyenoord on the 30th of October, 2011. Van Dijk had a personal setback in the tournament but, shortly after the 20th birthday, he was admitted to the hospital suffering from peritonitis and kidney poisoning. Van Dijk later revealed that was close to dying due to the medical crisis, and the hospital even went to the extent of asking for his signature on the “sort of will” in the event of his death.

He did come back to Groningen and impressed during the next season. After the season and having Virgil van Dijk having “outgrown” the club the club, he was offered to several larger Eredivisie clubs which included Ajax and Ajax, but all of them decided not to accept him.

Celtic

On June 21, 2013 Van Dijk signed with Celtic for an amount of PS2.6 million and a four-year agreement with an additional 10% selling-on fee for Groningen. Virgil van Dijk made his debut 17 August, in place of Efe Ambrose in the final 13 minutes of the 2 – 0 Scottish Premiership win over Aberdeen at Pittodrie Stadium. A week later, he was given his debut in a draw that ended in a 2-2 draw against Inverness Caledonian Thistle at Celtic Park. On the 9th of November, Van Dijk scored his first Celtic goals, scoring both goals in the second half of a 4-1 victory against Ross County. After a solo effort, Van Dijk scored the final goal in a win against St Johnstone on 26 December.

Virgil van Dijk scored again on 26 January 2014 in the 4-0 victory over Hibernian to give Celtic their 11th consecutive league victory. On February 25 Van Dijk was dismissed after 13 minutes in the eventual 1-1 loss to Aberdeen in an official foul on Peter Pawlett; it was Celtic’s first loss in the league. After Celtic having already been crowned league winners, Van Dijk netted again on May 7 to make Celtic 3-1 ahead against St Johnstone, in an eventual draw of 3-3. He was among three Celtic players selected to the PFA Scotland Team of the Year. Van Dijk was nominated for the PFA Scotland Players’ Player of the Year award , but was beaten out by his fellow Celtic athlete Kris Commons.

Season 2014-2015

On the 22nd of July, 2014. Virgil van Dijk and Teemu Pukki both scored two goals in a 4-0 win at home against KR in the UEFA Champions League qualifier, which allowed their team to advance to the next round with a 5-0 the aggregate. The first goal of his Premiership season was scored on November 9, scoring on the last minute of Stefan Johansen’s corner for a 2-1 victory at Aberdeen.Three weeks after, Van Dijk scored the first and only goal in Celtic’s 4-0 victory over Heart of Midlothian in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup.Four days later his seventh goal in the league was enough to secure victory in the home match against Glasgow neighbors Partick Thistle.

Virgil van Dijk was again on the target on the 21st of January, 2015 when he scored the opening goal of an 4-0 home win against Motherwell. On February 26 the striker was dismissed in the 36th minute of the match against Inter Milan for a foul on Mauro Icardi, and Celtic lost to Inter Milan 1-0 and 4-3 in aggregate in the final 32 games of UEFA Europa League. The same incident occurred on March 8, during the Cup quarter-final against Dundee United at Tannadice Park and was sent off with an red card after 11 minutes of a clash against Calum Butcher. 

The suspension he received for next weekend’s Scottish League Cup Final was annulled on appeal, similar to the suspension from Paul Paton, who was exiled after being mistakenly identified as Butcher. Van Dijk played the full 90 minutes of the final match at Hampden Park, which Celtic defeated by 2-0. On the 18th of March, in Celtic played their third match in succession in a tie with Dundee United, Van Dijk scored in the closing minutes to ensure a win of 4-0 in the Cup replay.

On April 19, Celtic contested the Cup semi-final match against Inverness at Hampden at Hampden. Virgil van Dijk opened the scoring by scoring an unintentional goal. After the demotion from goalie Craig Gordon, Celtic fell to 3-2, losing their chances of an triple. A few days later, also via a free kick Van Dijk was able to confirm a 2-1 win against Dundee. The team was crowned champions of the league in addition, Van Dijk was included in the League’s Top Team of the Season for the second time in succession. Virgil van Dijk was once again nominated in award of the PFA Scotland Players’ Player award, but was not able to compete to a co-player and teammate, this second time Stefan Johansen.

The Dutchman made his professional debut with Southampton on September 12 in the 0-0 draw with West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns. A week after, Virgil van Dijk marked his third Premier League appearance with his first goal for the club. The goal took the form of an angled shot at the eleventh-minute that bring Southampton ahead after an assist from James Ward-Prowse, in the 3-1 win at home against Swansea City. On May 7, 2016 Van Dijk signed a new six-year deal for the Saints.

Season 2016-17

On the 22nd of January, 2017. He was appointed team captain for Southampton following his departure from Jose Fonte. On the same day the team suffered an ankle injury during a match against Leicester City. The injury kept him in this year’s EFL Cup Final, which Southampton was defeated by Manchester United at Wembley Stadium.

After a great 2016-17 campaign in Southampton, Virgil van Dijk was at the center of attention from Liverpool and Liverpool, who apologized to Southampton for an unconstitutional approach to the player following declaring his desire to move to Liverpool. On August 7, 2017 Van Dijk handed in a transfer request to Southampton and issued an announcement with it, stressing his desire to switch clubs in the coming transfer window.

On December 27, 2017 it was reported the news that Virgil van Dijk would join Liverpool during the transfer window that opened on January 1st, 2018, for a reported cost in the region of PS75 million. The former club Celtic will receive 10 percent of Van Dijk’s transfer fees due to the sell-on clause within the terms of his Southampton contract. Southampton said the unannounced fee for the transfer would be the highest amount ever paid on the football field for a defensive player.

Van Dijk was included in the UEFA Champions League Squad of the Season despite playing only half the time within the Champions League, with the UEFA Technical Observers saying: “Van Dijk arrived at Anfield and provided composure and stability in the competition’s knockout stages.” Van Dijk played the full 90 minutes of the final of 2018’s UEFA Champions League Final against Real Madrid, which Liverpool lost 3-3. Van Dijk played 22 games across all competitions during his debut season at Liverpool, scoring just one time.

Season 2018-19

On August 20, 2018, Virgil van Dijk was voted man of the match by BBC Sport and Sky Sports for his performance in the 2 -0 win against Crystal Palace. Van Dijk received the Liverpool Player of the Month award for his performance in August. Two days later, Van Dijk was awarded an assist in the winner in a derby clash with city-rivals Everton. Liverpool took the lead 1-0 because of Divock’s 96th-minute goal, which was facilitated with the Van Dijk volley and a subsequent mistake by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

On the 27th of February, Virgil van Dijk scored twice in a 5-0 victory over Watford. In the next month, he netted one and scored scoring his debut goal of the Champions League for the club as well as assisted on another goal in a 3-1 win against Bayern Munich. As a result he became one of the few players ever since Craig Bellamy in 2007 to score and assist in a score in a match for Liverpool in a knockout stage game away from home in the tournament.

2019-20 season

In August, Van Dijk won UEFA player of the year. On the 2nd of September, 2019 he won the award and was nominated for the final three spots of the most prestigious FIFA soccer awards. On 23 September the team was awarded second in the Best FIFA Men’s Player and in the FIFA FIFpro Men’s World 11. In October, Virgil van Dijk was shortlisted as one of 30 footballers to be a part of The Ballon d’Or. The event took place in December the Netherlands, he was runner-up to Lionel Messi On 21 December 2019 After having missed the semi-final in the 2018 FIFA Club World Cup with illness. Van Dijk played in the final against Flamengo and Liverpool winning the award for the first time ever in the club’s history.

2021-22 season

Virgil van Dijk made his first appearance in more than nine months on the 29th of July 2021. He was in as a second-half substitute during a preseason friendly against Hertha BSC. On the 13th of August, 2021 Van Dijk signed a new contract for four years, which will keep his place at Liverpool until 2025. The first goal he scored for Liverpool in the span of 14 months was in the match against his former team Southampton and he scored a volley off the corner.

International career

Virgil van Dijk made his international debut for the Netherlands in a 2-1 win against Kazakhstan on October 10, 2015. This was in a UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying match. Ronald Koeman, his manager, gave Van Dijk the captaincy of the Netherlands. His first match as captain was a friendly loss to England by 1-0 the day after. 

He scored his first international goal on 26 March to complete a 3-0 victory over European champions Portugal at Stade de Geneve. He scored in a 3-0 victory over 2014 World Cup Champions Germany in the UEFA Nations League on 13 October. 

He also scored the equalizer in his next match against Germany. This was after Dwight Lodeweges, assistant coach, sent him a short note in a break with the request that he play forward in the final minutes of the match. 

This goal allowed the Netherlands to win the Nations League group phase. Later, he captained his country to victory against Portugal in the final. Virgil van Dijk decided to withdraw from the UEFA Euro 2020 postponement in May 2021 to allow him to rest after sustaining a long-term injury sustained in October 2020.
