Jordan Perry Morris (born October 26, 1994) is an American professional soccer player who plays as a winger and forwards for Major League Soccer club Seattle Sounders FC and the United States national team. He grew up on Mercer Island, Washington, and joined the Sounders youth academy before playing college soccer at Stanford University.

Morris won the Hermann Trophy in his senior season at Stanford and was called up to the United States national team, scoring in a friendly against Mexico. He signed for Seattle’s senior team in 2016 as a Homegrown Player.

Personal Life

Morris was born in Seattle, Washington to Michael and Leslie Morris. His father, Dr. Michael Morris, is the chief medical officer of Seattle Sounders FC. He has three siblings named Christopher, Julian, and Talia. He attended Mercer Island High School, where he played high school soccer before joining Sounders Academy.

Morris was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of nine and is one of the few professional athletes fit to play. He said having diabetes helped shape him. His “T1D” tattoo on his inner arm is a tribute to the bracelet that people with diabetes must wear.

Jordan Morris Club Career

In January 2016, Morris trained with German club Werder Bremen at their winter camp, which Bremen CEO Thomas Eichin described as “an opportunity for us to get to know the player better”.

Later in January, Bremen extended the trial of Morris, who then played in a friendly match against Inter Baku PIK and recorded an assist. Bremen offered Morris a contract and Eichin expressed confidence that he would be signed, but Morris rejected the German club’s offer in favor of playing in the United States again.

Seattle Sounders F.C.

After winning the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship, it was speculated that Morris would start playing professionally. Trainer Jürgen Klinsmann stated that Morris “obviously has to” turn professional. On January 5, 2016, Morris announced that he had decided to forgo his senior year at Stanford to turn professional.

It was widely speculated that Morris would sign with the Sounders, the club his father works for, and also owns his fan rights. On January 21, 2016, Morris signed with Seattle Sounders FC, receiving the highest hometown player contract in MLS history worth approximately $250,000 a year. He joined the Sounders’ preseason training camp in Arizona, making his debut in a friendly against Celaya F.C.

Morris scored his first Major League Soccer goal for the Sounders on April 16, 2016, against the Philadelphia Union.

He went on to score in his next three straight games, tying Seattle’s rookie scoring record, his next goal breaking the rookie scoring record set by Steve Zakuani in 2009. Since then, he has helped his team win the MLS Cup. after a run from ninth to fourth place, along with the help of Nicolás Lodeiro, a new mid-season acquisition made by Seattle.

Morris returned for the 2019 season and scored 10 goals during the regular season and a hat-trick in the playoffs to help the Sounders win a second MLS Cup title. He was named MLS Comeback Player of the Year for his recovery.

Loan to the City of Swansea

On 22 January 2021, Swansea City announced that they had signed Morris on loan for the remainder of the 2020–21 EFL Championship season. He made his debut on January 30 as a substitute against Rotherham United.

During a match against Huddersfield Town on 20 February, Morris sustained an ACL injury in his left knee and was stretchered out in the 66th minute. The injury forced him to miss the remainder of Swansea City’s season, as well as national team matches. As a result, his loan period was terminated prematurely.

International career

In May 2013, Morris was one of 22 players named to the US under-20 team for the Toulon Tournament, where he made three appearances. He also made appearances for the US under-23 national team on August 6, 2014, and scored in a 5-1 win over Barbados.

On August 28, 2014, Morris received his first senior call-up to the US men’s team for a friendly against the Czech Republic, making him the first college player to be called up since Chris Albright was called up.

In 1999 when he was still playing at the University of Virginia. Although he was benched for that match, he made his international debut in November in a 4-1 loss to Ireland.

On 21 January 2022, Morris received his first World Cup qualifying call-up since September 2017 after a lengthy recovery from injury.
