On April 2, 2006, Sánchez left temporarily to play for the Mexico national team at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, leaving Talavera in goal. This was followed by a loss to Atlas in the Clásico Tapatío.

In the last game of the season, Guadalajara lost to Toluca, 2-0, but after a dismal performance in the first leg of the quarterfinal against Jaguares when they made a big mistake in added time that led to the goal of Jaguars win. Coach José Manuel de la Torre left him as the starter and he was replaced by Luis Ernesto Michel and Guadalajara came from behind and advanced to the semifinals.

The following season, when Oswaldo Sánchez returned, Talavera was seen as the third goalkeeper for Guadalajara, with Michel as the second goalkeeper, after Oswaldo left Guadalajara, Michel was the starting goalkeeper and Talavera the substitute. After this, he did not have action with Guadalajara again, making the decision to leave the club to have more minutes played.

Tigres UANL

Guadalajara lent Talavera to Tigres UANL on a one-year loan in 2008, in which he rarely saw action with the team, as he was competing with Óscar Pérez for the job. However, bad luck came for Talavera, as Talavera was injured in training, leaving Enrique Palos in the next place. After making a full recovery, Alfredo was released from Tigres.

Toluca

Talavera was transferred to Toluca as a substitute for first-team goalkeeper Hernán Cristante, as he was injured for the 2009 Apertura. On July 26, 2009, he made his league debut for Toluca playing against his former club Guadalajara in a 4–3 victory. On May 15, 2010, Talavera reached his first final as a starter after defeating Pachuca 1–0 in the second leg of the 2010 Bicentennial championship semifinal (3–2 on aggregate). On May 23, Talavera helped Toluca win the championship, defeating Santos Laguna on penalties 4–3 after saving Fernando Arce’s shot. His performances led him to win the tournament’s Golden Glove award.

Overall, he saw action in five matches in that tournament and started in the final against the United States, where Mexico would win 4-2.

Talavera was included in the 23-man squad that took part in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup held in Brazil, but did not appear in any of the group stage matches as Mexico failed to advance from the group stage.
