José María Giménez de Vargas (born 20 January 1995) is an Uruguayan professional footballer who plays as a central defender for the Spanish club Atlético de Madrid and the Uruguay national team.
After starting his professional career at Danubio FC, Giménez moved to Spain and signed for Atlético de Madrid before the 2013-14 season. A solid, powerful, and quick defender, Giménez quickly settled into the club, winning four major titles with the latter, including the La Liga title in his debut season.
At the international level, Giménez made his debut for Uruguay in 2013 and has since represented the nation in two FIFA World Cups and four editions of the Copa América.

Club Career
Danubio
Giménez, a Toledo native, made his professional debut for Danubio F.C. against River Plate on November 17, 2012, in the Uruguayan Primera División (at the time, manager Juan Ramón Carrasco was in charge). He began the game and played the entire 90 minutes, although Danubio lost 2-0.
Atlético Madrid
Giménez’s €900,000 contract with Spanish club Atlético Madrid was officially announced on April 25, 2013, and it was announced that he will join the team during the 2013–14 preseason. Giménez made his Atleti and La Liga debut on September 14 when he started the team’s 4-2 victory over UD Almera at home.
José Giménez scored his first goal for the club on 6 December 2014, opening a 2–0 win away to Elche CF to move Atlético into second place. He also scored a header against their biggest rival Real Madrid in Atlético’s 2–0 win in the Copa del Rey in January 2015.

José Giménez participated with Uruguay in the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup when the team finished as runners-up behind France.
He debuted for the Uruguay senior team in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification match against Colombia on September 10, 2013.
On 2 June 2014, Giménez was included in Uruguay’s squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Final. The 19-year-old defender made his tournament debut against England in the team’s second group match, replacing injured captain Diego Lugano in La Celeste’s 2-1 victory. He then went on to start the final group match, a 1-0 win over Italy, and the 2-0 round of 16 loss to Colombia.
José Giménez scored his first international goal in a 1–0 friendly win against South Korea on 8 September 2014. In May 2015, coach Óscar Tabárez named him in Uruguay’s squad for the 2015 Copa América . On June 20, he scored Uruguay’s goal in a 1-1 draw with Paraguay in which both teams advanced to the knockout stage.
In May 2018 he was included in Uruguay’s 26-man provisional squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. On June 15, with the score tied 0-0, he scored the winning goal in the last minute of Uruguay’s opening World Cup match against Egypt.
In March 2019, Tabárez included José Giménez in Uruguay’s final 23-man roster for the 2019 Copa América in Brazil. He topped the tie in a 2–2 group draw with Japan in Porto Alegre and was the only Uruguayan in the Team of the Tournament despite a quarter-final elimination.
