Club Career

Atletico Junior

Atletico Junior hosted an open trial in 2014 and Luis Díaz was impressed enough to be a part of the youth team. Due to his Wayuu heritage, he was part of Colombia’s 22-man team for the Copa Americana de Pueblos Indigenas 2015. After impressing at the tournament, he was assigned immediately to the farm team Barranquilla by Atletico Junior’s senior team in 2016. Barranquilla gave Diaz a diet plan to help him gain 10 kilograms due to his slim build. Diaz made his senior debut as a substitute on 26 April 2016 in a Categoria Primera A home loss to Deportivo Pereira. His first senior goal was on 14 May when he scored the winner of a home defeat by Cucuta Deportivo 2-1.

After making his Copa Colombia team debut on the 6th of June 2017, Luis Díaz was promoted to Junior’s main squad. On 27 August, he replaced Matias Mier at Once Caldas in a 3-2 defeat. His first goal was scored on 20 September, in a Copa Sudamericana win against Cerro Porteno.

Luis Díaz was a regular starter in the 2018 season and scored his first goal at the top tier, scoring the game’s only home victory over Atletico Bucaramanga on February 4, 2018. He also scored braces against Once Caldas and Rionegro Aguilas to complete the campaign with 16 goals.

Porto

Luis Díaz signed a five-year contract with the Portuguese club FC Porto. The club bought 80% of his economic rights in exchange for a EUR7 million fee. Zenit Saint Petersburg also wanted him but he was persuaded otherwise by his compatriots, former Porto players Radamel Falcao, and James Rodriguez. Diaz also said that he had previously signed a precontract with Cardiff City prior to his Porto move. However, the move never happened.

Luis Díaz made his debut in the UEFA Champions League on 7 August, in a 1-0 win against Krasnodar as a substitute for Romario baro in the 55th minute. Six days later, he scored his first goal in the return match, but in a 3-2 defeat at the Estadio do Dragao. He made his Primeira Liga debut against Gil Vicente on August 10, scoring a 2-1 defeat. A week later, he scored the first goal to win a 4-0 victory at home against Vitoria de Guimaraes. Renzo Saravia, Mateus Uribe, and Agustin Marchesin were all suspended from the derby against Boavista in November for having drunk the night before.

Luis Díaz was substituted for Mehdi Taremi in the Supertaca Candido de Oliveira 2020 against O Classico rivals Benfica on 23 December. While on international duty in Colombia, Diaz signed a five-year contract with Premier League club Liverpool, for EUR45 million (PS37.5million), and EUR15 million (PS12.5million) add-ons. Before signing for Liverpool, Luis Díaz was also interested in Tottenham Hotspur. After learning about Tottenham’s offer, Liverpool made a change in their summer plans and signed Diaz to a permanent contract. Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool’s manager, was impressed.

He made his debut as a substitute for Curtis Jones on 6 February in a FA Cup fourth-round match at Cardiff City. In the 3-1 victory, he assisted Takumi Minamino‘s goal. Thirteen days later, he scored his first goal for Liverpool in the second league game for the club. This was his home victory over Norwich City at Anfield, which ended in a 3-1 win. He played the first 97 minutes in the 2022 EFL Cup Final against Chelsea. His team won the penalty shootout.
