Luke McNally Club Career

Initial career

McNally was born and raised in Enfield, County Meath, and played for Enfield Celtic until joining his hometown League of Ireland team, Drogheda United, in August 2015. Prior to going to Dublin club St Patrick’s Athletic in March 2017 and playing for their under-19 team, he spent the 2015 and 2016 seasons playing for the club’s under-17 team.

In the same Under 19s squad as he were future members of the first team Jake Walker, Brian Maher, Paul Clearly, and Joe Manley. In 2018, his team advanced to the Enda McGuill Cup final, where they finally fell to Bohemians 2-1 on September 4 at Richmond Park.

St. Patrick’s Athletic

On August 8, 2017, McNally made his debut appearance for the first team, being listed on the substitutes’ list for a Leinster Senior Cup match against Firhouse Clover. On February 8, 2019, it was revealed that McNally has signed a two-year professional contract with St. Patrick’s Athletic and would spend the 2019 League of Ireland First Division season on loan at Drogheda United.

After a standout season with Drogheda United, McNally was retained by new Pat’s manager Stephen O’Donnell. McNally will return to Pat’s first team training for preseason on December 2 ahead of the 2020 season. On January 27, 2020, McNally re-signed a two-year contract with the team.

On February 14, 2020, in the club’s 1-0 loss against Waterford in the season opener at Richmond Park, he made his senior debut. Due to the Coronavirus epidemic, the season was cut short after only 4 games and then resumed with a halved amount of games. During this time, McNally’s transfer to EFL League One team Ipswich Town was rumoured.

However, the transfer fell through, thus he remained with St. Patrick’s Athletic and headed in his first goal for the team in a 3-2 loss against Finn Harps on October 8, 2020. After a season in which he was one of just three players in the entire league to play every minute of every game, he was named the club’s Young Player of the Year for 2020 on December 2, 2020.

Oxford United

Oxford United of the EFL League One officially announced on January 29, 2021, that they had signed McNally to a three-and-a-half-year deal for an undisclosed sum. He underwent a “short pre-season” during his first few months at the club to become fit after suffering a hip injury, and he made his first appearance on the first team matchday squad on April 2, 2021, when he was an unused substitute away to Sunderland.

In a preseason friendly game against Oxford City in July 2021, when he made his first appearance for the first squad, colleague and fellow defender Sam Long referred to him as “an incredible machine.” On August 11, 2021, he made his professional debut for the team against Burton Albion at Pirelli Stadium in an EFL Cup match.

His team defeated Burton Albion 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation time to go to the next round and face Queens Park Rangers. Three days later, in a 2-1 victory over Charlton Athletic at the Kassam Stadium, he made his league debut. On November 23, 2021, McNally scored his first goal in English football, opening the scoring in a 3-1 victory over Fleetwood Town at home.

Burnley

On June 28, 2022, it was revealed that McNally had joined EFL Championship team, Burnley, on a four-year deal for an undisclosed sum thought to be around £2 million, making him the club’s second acquisition under new manager Vincent Kompany. He made his debut against Watford at Vicarage Road on August 12, 2022, coming off the bench late and filling in as a replacement striker.

McNally made his debut for the Republic of Ireland Under-19 team on February 2, 2017, in a win over Czech Republic Under-19 at the RSC. He played alongside players who would go on to represent the Republic of Ireland at the senior level, including Aaron Connolly, Dara O’Shea, Mark Travers, and Lee O’Connor.
