Martínez Valero Stadium History

The Martínez Valero Stadium was inaugurated on September 8, 1976, replacing the old Campo de Altabix, built-in 1923. It was built by the architect Juan Boix Matarredona and is now the biggest sports venue in the province of Alicante. The opening match was Elche CF against the Mexican National Team, which ended in a 3-3 draw.

The goals for Elche CF were scored by Finarolli, Orellana, and Gómez Voglino. It was one of the 17 stadiums where matches were held in the 1982 FIFA World Cup. On June 15, 1982, it was the venue where Hungary achieved a record margin of victory in World Cup history, beating El Salvador 10-1 before a crowd of 23,000. In addition, the Estadio Martínez Valero hosted the final of the Copa del Rey in the 2002-03 season. It is listed by UEFA as a four-star UEFA elite stadium.

The stadium received the AFEPE Award (an organisation that brings together the supporters clubs of all Spanish clubs) for the best La Liga stadium in the 2013-2014 season.
