Club Career

Barnsley

Holgate was born in Doncaster, South Yorkshire and joined Barnsley at the age of nine.

Having progressed through the club’s academy and reserve team, Holgate signed his first professional contract, keeping him at Barnsley until 2016.

He made his League One debut for Barnsley on 2 December 2014, playing the full ninety minutes of a 1-1 draw with Doncaster.

Everton

As Séamus Coleman suffered a broken leg in a World Cup qualifier in March 2017, causing him to miss nearly a year, Ronald Koeman selected Holgate as a replacement at right back in the last part of the season.

Holgate changed his team number from 30 to 2 for the 2018–19 season, as the previous owner, French midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin, wore number 18 in his place. However, the move did not mean that Holgate played a larger role within the season. He only made five league appearances before being loaned out to West Bromwich Albion.

On 29 October 2019, Holgate started for the EFL Cup match against Watford. He scored the first goal by heading in from Theo Walcott’s cross in the 73rd minute and this was his first goal for Everton.

After Jonjoe Kenny finished his season-long loan spell at Schalke 04, he took the number 2 jersey and Holgate took the number 4 this time. Holgate was injured in a pre-season game with Preston North End, which kept him out of action for two months.

Holgate said in an interview with The Voice in March 2020 that he would be open to representing the Jamaican national team, although he had not given much thought to his international future. However, he also said in an interview to Sky Sports the same month that he wanted to be called up to England, stating: “Everyone wants to play for England. When you’re a kid, that’s the ultimate, but it’s up to me to decide that playing well at Everton.”

Despite being born in England and his previous caps for England, it was reported in March 2021 that Holgate would be called up to the Jamaican national team, as part of a plot by the Jamaican Football Federation to deliberately call up a number of English players. to improve the nation’s chances of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup.
