Football Career

Here, we take a closer look at his Football career so far.

Matty James Club Career

Manchester United

James, a Lancashire native from Bacup, entered the Manchester United Academy at a young age. In October 2005, when he was 14 years old, he made his debut for the under-18 team. Just over a year later, he made his next under-18 debut, replacing Magnus Eikrem in a match against Manchester City in the Premier Academy League. After making a further eight appearances for the under-18s in the 2006–07 campaign, he began the 2007–08 campaign as a fill-in defender before becoming a regular member of the squad.

The 2007–2008 season saw James score his first goals while wearing a Manchester United jersey, both of which were league goals. After making his debut for the reserves in November 2007, James started playing regularly for them in 2008–09 while continuing to play a significant role for the under-18 squad.

James gained his first call-up to the Manchester United senior team on May 24, 2009, at the conclusion of a season in which he had made 22 appearances for the reserves and 14 for the under-18s. James was given the number 47 jersey for the game and was listed on the bench but did not play.

James played in the 2008–09 Lancashire Senior Cup final, which Manchester United won 1-0 over Bolton Wanderers, before signing his first professional contract with the club in July 2009. James received a new squad number (43), was listed as an unused replacement, and received the number before the first team’s match against Barnsley in the Fourth Round of the League Cup on October 27, 2009.

Preston North End (loan)

James joined Preston North End on loan in February 2010 for the remainder of the 2009–10 campaign, following in the footsteps of Manchester United teammate Danny Welbeck. On February 9, 2010, Preston faced Sheffield United, and he was inserted right into the starting lineup.

He scored within the first 10 minutes with a deflected strike from beyond the box that beat Ian Bennett in goal for Sheffield United. James left Preston on a season-long loan on July 2, 2010, although he later returned to Manchester United at the conclusion of the 2009–10 campaign.

After firing his son on December 30, 2010, Sir Alex Ferguson made the decision to recall Ritchie De Laet, Joshua King, and James from their loans at Preston. De Laet and King returned right away, but James’ loan agreement prevented him from doing so until 4 January 2011.

Leicester City

James and De Laet made a double transfer to Leicester City on May 15, 2012, for an unknown sum. Each of them agreed to a three-year contract. James made his professional debut for Leicester alongside De Laet and Jamie Vardy against Torquay United. He scored his first goal for the team (and Leicester’s third of the evening) as the Foxes defeated the League Cup opponent 4-0.

Over the remainder of the season, James scored 3 more goals (all in the league), including one in a 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest on the last day of the regular season that propelled Leicester into the final playoff spot. James played in both halves of the Championship Playoff semifinal loss against Watford, which ended up being 3-2 on aggregate.

In the 2013–14 season, James started more games than ever before. He was in the starting lineup for Leicester’s first five league games until being controversially given his first career red card in a 1-2 loss to Charlton Athletic after receiving two yellow cards.

James’ lone goal for the year on February 8, 2014, helped Leicester overturn a 2-0 deficit and tie Watford at two goals apiece. James participated in 35 league games as Leicester earned Premier League promotion, winning the Championship trophy in the process.

He made a loaned return to Barnsley on October 16, 2020. James signed a loan with Championship team Coventry City on January 6, 2021. In a 1-1 tie with Blackburn Rovers on February 27, 2021, he scored his first goal for Coventry. Leicester made his exit from the team officially on May 21, 2021.

Bristol City

James signed a three-year contract with the Championship team Bristol City on June 23, 2021.

International career

James has been a consistent member of the England Under-16 and Under-17 teams, and in 2009 he received a call-up to the England Under-19 team to compete in the 2009 UEFA European Under-19 Championship. He was given the role of captain, and in his debut outing in that capacity, England prevailed over Austria by a score of 3–2 in the opening match of the tournament.
