2009–2015
Nishu Kumar started with CFA. He was selected for AIFF Elite Academy in 2011 as part of Tata Tea & Inter Milan Soccer Stars. He was picked up to India’s U-20 team for the AFC U-19 Championship qualification.
2015–2020 Bengaluru FC
Nishu Kumar was signed by Bengaluru together with Daniel Lalhlimpuia and Malsawmzuala in November 2015 for two years with an option for a third.
2015–16 Bangalore Super Division
Nishu made his Bengaluru FC debut on 13 April 2016 against Ayeyawady United. Bengaluru FC won 5–3. Bengaluru defeated 5–0 to Mohun Bagan in his league debut on 23 April 2016. Bengaluru won the Seas League, giving Nishu his first trophy. Nishu was retained for the 2016-17 I-League.
His first game of the season was a 3–0 win over Mumbai FC on January 18. Nishu played his first continental match of the season in Bengaluru’s 0–1 AFC Cup win over Maziya S&RC on 4 April.
He scored his first goal for the club against Abahani Limited Dhaka in the 2017 AFC Cup on April 18. Bengaluru won his last league encounter, against DSK Shivajians, 7–0. Bengaluru moved to ISL from I-League the next year. Nishu was kept in the 2017-18 ISL team.
Nishu’s first 2019-20 Indian Super League match, against NorthEast United, ended 0–0. On 30 January 2020, he scored his first goal of the season against Hyderabad. Bengaluru qualified for the knockout stage for the third straight year but lost to ATK 3–2 on aggregate.
Nishu Kumar will reportedly leave the club in 2020. He refused the club’s contract extension and left. Nishu played a key role in Bengaluru FC’s success during his 55 league matches and two goals.
2020-Present Kerala Blasters
Nishu finalized his move to Kerala Blasters FC on September 12, 2020. Nishu Kumar signed a four-year deal with the Blasters, beating Sandesh Jhingan’s record. He made his Blasters debut against NorthEast United FC on November 26. Nishu suffered a season-ending knee injury in February 2021.
He wasn’t on the team for the 2021 Durand Cup. Nishu joined the Blasters in October to finish his rehabilitation after six months. After seven months, he returned to action in a pre-season friendly against Odisha FC in November.
Nishu came on as a 73rd-minute substitute in the Blasters’ 0–0 tie with NorthEast United on 25 November 2021. On 12 January 2022, he scored his debut goal for the club against Odisha, a 0–2 win. Next season, he’ll wear No. 22. He wore 5 until then.
