Panama Women’s National Football Team History
2000s
In 2002, Panama qualified for the CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup for the first time after securing one of the two places in the Central American Zone qualification. They went 1-0-2 at the 2002 CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup and failed to qualify for the knockout round.
Panama once again qualified for the Women’s Gold Cup in 2006 after winning their qualifying group. Panama lost their first-round match 2-1 to Jamaica and was eliminated
2010s
Panama did not participate in the 2010 CONCACAF Women’s World Cup qualifying tournament as it did not enter the Central American qualification.
In 2013 Panama participated for the first time in the Central American Games. They went 1-0-1 and advanced to the semifinals, where they lost to Costa Rica. Panama would finish in fourth place after losing the third-place game to Guatemala.
Panama finished second in their group in the 2014 Central American Qualifying and did not qualify for the 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Championship as only the group winner advancing.
At the 2017 Central American Games, Panama improved on their result of four ago by defeating El Salvador on penalties to finish in third place.
Panama secured one of two available spots in the Central American Qualifying for the 2018 CONCACAF Women’s Championship, marking their first participation in the CONCACAF Championship in 12 years. Panama was drawn in Group A, along with the United States, Mexico, and Trinidad and Tobago
2020
Panama qualified for the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship and participated in the group stage, against arch-rival and neighbor Costa Rica, along with regional powerhouse Canada and Trinidad and Tobago. Panama suffered two losses against Costa Rica and Canada, thus missing the opportunity to finish in the top two, but by winning 1-0 over Trinidad and Tobago in the decisive game for third place, Panama was able to qualify for the playoffs between confederations. for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, where the search for her potential World Cup debut continues.
