The Parc des Princes was officially inaugurated on June 4, 1972, by French President Georges Pompidou. The first match was the French Cup final between Marseille and Bastia (2-1).

A year after the inauguration, in 1973, the newly founded Paris Saint-Germain moved to the stadium.

Construction of the current state-of-the-art arena began in 1998 and it took just under four years to complete.

It had four years left before completion when construction had to be halted due to the French national football team qualifying for the 1998 FIFA World Cup.
