Pritam Kotal Club Career

Early career and Indian Arrows

Born in Uttarpara, West Bengal, Kotal started playing football at the age of four, inspired by his uncle, who was also a footballer. He then started his youth career with Chirag United before playing for the West Bengal youth team. Kotal also played for Wari in 2009.

After spending time with India’s under-19 team, Kotal joined the Football Federation of India’s I-League development team, Pailan Arrows (now Indian Arrows). He played in six games during his debut in the 2011-12 season for the team.

Mohun Bagan

After Pailan Arrows disbanded and before the 2013-14 season, Kotal signed with Mohun Bagan. He made his debut for the club on October 23, 2013, against Salgaocar. He came on as an 85th-minute substitute for Aiborlang Khongjee as Mohun Bagan won 2–1. Kotal scored his first goal for the club on February 7, 2015, against Pune.

His goal in the 77th minute was the only one in Mohun Bagan’s 1-0 win. He scored the second goal of his career and second of the season on May 20 against Royal Wahingdoh. His goal was the first of two as Mohun Bagan won 2-0. Apart from providing two goals, Kotal also helped Mohun Bagan win their first I-League title and thus Mohun Bagan became the first Kolkata team to win the title, since the league’s inception in 2007.

City of Pune (lent periods)

In July 2014, it was announced that Kotal would be among the 84 Indian players to be part of the inaugural 2014 ISL Domestic Draft, being available on loan from Mohun Bagan. On July 22, 2014, he was selected by Pune City in the fifth round of the draft. He made his debut for the club in the Indian Super League on October 18 against Mumbai City FC.

Despite starting the match, Pune City lost the match against their Maharashtrian rivals 5-0. After his first season at the club, Kotal said that the experience of playing in the Indian Super League really helped him, that he played left-back in every game he played, and that playing with former Inter Milan defender Bruno Cirillo, really helped. him to improve his play style.

On 14 June 2016, it was announced that Kotal had signed with Atlético Kolkata (later ATK) on loan for the 2016 Indian Super League season. He made his debut for the team on October 2 against Chennaiyin FC. Kotal started in the match and played the full 90 minutes, as Atlético Kolkata drew 2–2.

Kolkata had a great season as they went on to qualify for the round of 16 of the season. Kolkata met Mumbai City in the semi-finals and advanced to the final with an aggregate score of 3-2 in both legs. During the second leg of the semi-final against Mumbai on December 13, Kotal was involved in a brawl that broke out after the final whistle of the match.

Delhi Dynamos

Kotal joined Indian Super League side Delhi Dynamos FC (present-day Odisha FC) for the 2017-18 season. He played his debut game for the club against FC Pune City on 22 November 2017, which ended in a 2–3 win for Delhi.

He scored his debut goal for the club against the Kerala Blasters on 10 January 2018, where Kotal scored an equalizer in the 44th minute, but the match turned out to be a loss, after Kerala scored two more goals, resulting in a defeat by 1-3 for Delhi.

He remained with the club through the 2018-19 season and was given the captain’s armband for his impressive 2017-18 campaign. He played his first game of the season against Pune City on 3 October 2018 in a 1-1 draw.

Return to ATK

In late 2018, it was reported and later confirmed that Kotal would return to ATK after the 2019 AFC Asian Cup in the January transfer window. He played his remaining 2018-19 campaign with ATK and played his first game with ATK that season against Kerala Blasters on 25 January 2019, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Kotal played his first game in a regular season after returning to ATK in the 2019-20 Indian Super League season against Kerala Blasters in the opening game of the season on October 20, which they eventually lost 2-1 after taking the advantage at first. He scored his debut goal for ATK and his first this season against C Goa on January 18, 2020, where he opened the scoring in the 47th minute of the game, which ended in a 2-0 win for ATK.

Pritam Kotal International career

Kotal began his international career with India at the under-19 level. After successfully passing a trial, Kotal was selected for the squad that went on an exhibition trip to China before playing for the team during the 2012 AFC Under-19 Championship qualifiers, which India failed to achieve. He then played for the under-22 team during the 2013 AFC Under-22 Championship qualifiers in Oman.

India qualified for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup after missing out on the 2015 edition. Kotal played five matches in the qualifiers for India at the 2019 AFC Asian Cup. Kotal was included in India’s 23-member squad to travel to the United Arab Emirates. He played his debut match in any edition of the AFC Asian Cup, and also the first of the 2019 edition on January 6, 2019, where India topped Thailand and defeated them with a whopping score of 1-4.

It was also India’s first win in an AFC Asian Cup match in 55 years and was also their biggest win in Asian Cup history. Kotal played all three matches in their group stage, including the do-or-die match against Bahrain on 14 January, in which India lost 0–1, resulting in India’s elimination from the campaign.
