Shaun Hutchinson Club Career

Motherwell

Hutchinson signed for Motherwell from Wallsend Boys Club in 2007.

“Motherwell gave me the first offer after I finished school, so I took it,” he said.

Hutchinson and his family were Newcastle United season ticket holders as children. His family transferred from Newcastle United to Motherwell once he joined. 

He made his Motherwell debut against Hamilton Academical on May 16, 2009. His team won 3–0. Hutchinson signed a two-year contract after debuting. 

Hutchinson scored in the Steelmen’s 8–1 Europa League triumph over Flamurtari on 23 July 2009.

Hutchinson started the season with two goals against St Johnstone and Kilmarnock. Hutchinson’s outstanding play drew interest from other clubs, but manager Jim Gannon wanted him to stay.  Despite transfer rumours, Hutchinson signed a three-year contract.

Hutchinson’s third goal came in a 6–1 loss to Rangers on 19 December 2009, his penultimate game. Craig Brown replaced Manager Gannon midseason. In his debut season at Motherwell, Hutchinson only made five appearances. Hutchinson wants to restart his career for “his sanity.” 

Hutchinson recovered from his hamstring injury in 2010–11 and was an unused substitute.

Hutchinson was supposed to go on loan to Ayr United in December 2010 to get a match-fit.

Motherwell called off the changeover due to severe weather and postponed matches.

Mark Reynolds’ departure to Sheffield Wednesday helped Hutchinson return to the first team in 2010–11. Hutchinson made his debut with Motherwell and Inverness CT on 16 January 2011. On 2 April 2011, Hutchinson scored in a 2–1 win over Aberdeen.

Hutchinson scored his first goal of the season against Aberdeen after being neglected by Craig Brown last season and at the beginning of this season. Motherwell lost the 2011 Scottish Cup final 3–0 to Celtic.

Hutchinson never expected to make the final and couldn’t stop smiling. Hutchinson signed a two-year contract extension with Motherwell on June 2, 2011. Stuart McCall, Brown’s replacement, gave Hutchinson a first-team opportunity to replace Reynolds. 

In 2011–12, Hutchinson played five games before suffering a Malleolar injury for four weeks against Celtic on 9 September 2011. Days later, Hutchinson got two months. On his return, he scored and set up a goal for Motherwell’s Keith Lasley against Inverness CT on 28 October 2011.

In the last 16 of the Scottish Cup, Hutchinson scored his second goal of the season in a 6–0 triumph over Greenock Morton.   Young Player of the Month for April 2012 was Hutchinson.   Hutchinson made 33 appearances. After Stephen Craigan’s retirement, Hutchinson realised he no longer needed him, having grown up and assumed responsibilities.   Daily Record journalists named Hutchinson to their Season Team. 

In 2012–13, Hutchinson injured his groin in the preseason and feared he would miss two months of the Champions League.

Hutchinson returned in a friendly and made his Champions League debut against Panathinaikos. Motherwell lost 3–0 on aggregate and was eliminated from the competition. Hutchinson committed several risky fouls against Panathinaikos in both legs. Hutchinson was sent off in the 77th minute of the first leg against Levante for bringing down Gekas.

Losing the return leg eliminated the squad. Motherwell drew 1-1 with St Mirren two days later with Hutchinson sent off for a second booking. Manager McCall was in tears after the referee gave Hutchinson a second yellow card. McCall rejected a proposal for Hutchinson in the summer transfer window.

Hutchinson scored in a 3–3 tie with Aberdeen on 21 September 2012. In a 2–0 loss to Rangers in the Scottish Communities League Cup, Hutchinson clashed with Francisco Sandaza, although he returned after treatment. Hutchinson strained his hamstring in a 1–0 loss to Hearts on 21 October 2012. Hutchinson’s hamstring issue sidelined him for weeks.

Hutchinson returned on 18 November 2012 in a 5–1 loss to Inverness, CT.   Hutchinson has reclaimed his first-team spot and aims to finish second. Hutchinson was chosen to the 2012–13 PFA Scotland Team of the Year with Darren Randolph, Nicky Law, and Michael Higdon. 

On aggregate, Motherwell lost 3–0 against Kuban Krasnodar as Hutchinson was booked in both legs.

Hutchinson assisted Henri Anier in the opener against Hibernian.

On 19 October 2013, he scored in a 2–1 win over Hearts.   Hutchinson was sent off after a second booking in a 1–0 win over Hibernian on 3 November 2013.   Hutchinson injured Ryan Jack in a match against Aberdeen on 25 January 2014. Derek McInnes thought Hutchinson should have been sent off, calling the tackle “reckless”   Hutchinson helped the club finish second by beating Aberdeen in the last game. 

Hutchinson said he was delighted at Motherwell despite the transfer rumours.

McCall urged him to sign a new deal in October 2013.

McCall revealed Hutchinson would leave the club in the summer but denied a deal to Rangers.

McCall hoped he could convince Hutchinson to re-sign despite rumours he might leave in the summer.

Fulham

On 16 June 2014, Hutchinson signed a two-year contract with Fulham.

Hutchinson made his debut on 5 July 2014, a 2–0 preseason win over East Fife. Fulham beat Hutchinson’s old club 2–0 on 12 July 2014. 

Hutchinson made his league debut for the club in the season opener, a 2–1 loss against Ipswich Town.

Hutchinson and five other first-team players were released in June 2016. Preseason of 2016/17, he joined Millwall.

Millwall

After being released by Fulham, Hutchinson signed a two-year agreement with the Lions. Hutchinson made his professional debut for Millwall on 16 August against Peterborough United at the ABAX Stadium. He came on for Shane Ferguson in the 77th minute but was injured before the game concluded.

Hutchinson scored the winning and final league goals of the 2016/2017 season against Bristol Rovers in the Bristol Rovers 3–4 Millwall game, which allowed the team to get to the League One play-off, which they won after a 1–0 win against Bradford City. Shane Ferguson’s corner led to Hutchinson’s 85th-minute header. Hutchinson scored despite a head injury and no number on his shirt to secure Millwall’s play-off spot.

Hutchinson re-signed with the Lions in 2018.

Hutchinson has subsequently played for the Lions despite injuries. Since then, Shaun Hutchinson has become a fixture of the Millwall defence and a fan favourite, winning players’ awards and being named to the Championship team of the year 19/20. He’s an old-school defender who’s strong in the air and often puts his body on the line, much to Millwall supporters’ joy. Hutchinson and Jake Cooper are fan favourites. Hutchinson is the first-team captain.
