Schmidt was born to Elmer and Cornelia Schmidt in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Before she was born, her parents moved to Canada from Paraguay. Her grandparents were born in Germany. She studied German in Portland and can speak it well.

Start of a job
Schmidt played for the Vancouver Whitecaps in 2005 and 2006, along with Christine Sinclair and Tiffeny Milbrett, who used to play for the Seattle Pilots. She played in eight games for the Whitecaps and started in three of them. In 2011, she played in the WPS for MagicJack. In 2012, she had a short-term deal with Kristianstads DFF.
Sky Blue FC
Schmidt joined Sky Blue FC on January 11, 2013, when the National Women’s Soccer League started. She played for Sky Blue for two seasons, making 42 appearances and scoring 8 goals.
FFC Frankfurt
Schmidt signed a one-year contract with Bundesliga Club 1. FFC Frankfurt in Germany on July 31, 2015. Schmidt stopped playing for 1. FFC Frankfurt after the 2017–2018 Bundesliga season.
Dash to Houston
Schmidt would sign with NWSL team Houston Dash in 2019 after three years with Frankfurt. She would score a penalty kick in the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup Final, which helped the Dash beat the Chicago Red Stars and win the club’s first major trophy. She would re-sign with the Dash in December 2020 and play for them through the 2022 season. The Dash would have the option to keep her for the 2023 season.
International career
Schmidt has played for Canada at the U-17 and U-20 levels, and she was Canada’s captain at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Championship in Russia in 2006. On April 19, 2005, she played her first game as a senior against the Netherlands.
On September 15, 2007, she scored against Ghana in her first World Cup game. She went on to start all four Olympic games in Beijing in 2008, and she also took part in the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2011. Schmidt and her team won a gold medal at the 2011 Pan American Games.
Schmidt played in her 30th straight international game against Scotland on February 28, 2012, in Cyprus. It was also the first time she scored two goals in a game. Schmidt and her team won a bronze medal at the Olympics in London in 2012. At the 2014 Cyprus Cup on March 5, she scored two goals in a 3–0 win over Finland.
She won the bronze medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in August. She played her 200th game for Canada on February 18, 2021, when the United States beat Canada 1-0 in the 2021 SheBelieves Cup. She won the gold medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics with Canada on August 6, 2021.
