Club Career

Tim Krul in Newcastle United

Krul started his professional career with RAS, then he moved to ADO Den Haag for the Eredivisie. After failing to sign professional terms, Krul signed a three-year contract with Newcastle United Premier League club in 2005. ADO requested a compensation fee and objected to the FIFA Dispute Resolution Chamber. ADO appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and the DRC denied the claim. ADO won the case before CAS in February 2007. Newcastle was ordered to pay EUR220,000 compensation.

He signed a four-year contract extension with Newcastle United on 13 June 2007. He was also part of the Dutch Under-21 team that won the European Championships.

Krul joined Falkirk, Scotland on loan from the beginning of August 2007. The contract was initially for one year. However, it was extended to the end of the season following a series of outstanding performances. He made his debut for Falkirk the next day and kept a clean sheet in their win against Gretna. Falkirk wanted to sign him initially on a permanent contract, but Newcastle refused.

Tim Krul was first-choice Steve Harper’s backup. Krul made his senior league debut in the first Football League Championship match away to West Bromwich Albion on August 8, 2009. Return to the Netherlands

Krul signed a one-year contract extension at Newcastle United on 25 August 2016. He then joined Ajax on a season-long, loan deal to get top-tier football while he was recovering from an injury. 

Krul was not able to play six games in the reserve team. Krul joined AZ Alkmaar, a fellow Eredivisie side, on loan for the remainder of the season.

Brighton & Hove Albion

Tim Krul signed on a season-long, loan deal for Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion. This brought him back together with Chris Hughton, his former Newcastle manager. Krul made his debut in the club’s third round of the EFL Cup against AFC Bournemouth on 19 September. He signed a long-term deal with Brighton the next day, ending his 12-year association with Newcastle. Krul was released by the club at the end of the season.

Norwich City

Krul signed a two-year contract with Championship club Norwich City in July 2018. In June 2019, Krul signed a three-year contract. Krul was named Norwich City’s player of the season in the 2019-20 campaign. This made him the fifth goalkeeper to be awarded the Barry Butler memorial trophy.

International career

Tim Krul represented the Netherlands at the U17 level in the 2005 FIFA U-17 World Cup, Peru. Krul represented the U21s in the 2008 Toulon Tournament and was part of the qualifying team for the 2011 European Under-21 Championship.

Tim Krul was awarded his first senior cap on the 4th of June 2011 when he made the Netherlands’ starting eleven against Brazil. Krul kept a clean sheet and made a few good saves to secure a draw of 0-0. Four days later, he played against Uruguay in his second international match. The match ended 1-1 after 90 minutes. Krul was summoned to the Netherlands UEFA Euro 2012 team but did not play. Krul was named as the starting goalkeeper in Louis van Gaal’s first competitive match against Turkey in Amsterdam. He kept a clean sheet and helped to win a 2-0 victory for the Oranje.

Tim Krul was selected in the Netherlands’ 2014 FIFA World Cup squad in Brazil in June 2014. Louis van Gaal brought Krul on as a substitute in the 120th minute for the penalty shootout. The Netherlands won 4-3 thanks to him saving two of five penalties. It was the first time that a goalkeeper was used as a substitute for a penalty shootout in World Cup history.
