Netherlands national football team History
KNVB has a rich history, with many name changes. The organization was founded on December 8, 1889, as the Dutch Football and Athletics Association (NVAB). The founding father was Pim Moliere, who also founded the country’s first club, the Harlemish Football Club (HFC) at the age of 14.
In 1895, after the breakup of the players, the name was changed to Dutch Football Association. Another name change came a few decades later. In 1929, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Football Association, the Queen came to Wilhelmina to give the organization the title of ‘Royal’. Thus was born the Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB).
An important milestone in the history of Dutch football came with the introduction of professional football in the early 1950s. During the post-war period, the KNVB refused to allow players to make payments, leading to Dutch talent being lured abroad into lucrative competitions. The governing body responded with a strong response: “The players who decided to continue their careers across the border will no longer be eligible for the Dutch national team.”
But the professionalism campaign did not stop. A rival, non-governmental, and “wild” football association was formed in the protest. Ten clubs left to join the new professional association. The KNVB eventually recognized the two associations merged, and professional football has existed since November 25, 1954.
Other memorable moments in KNVB’s history include the Dutch national team’s first game in 1905 and the European title in 1988. Another historic year was 1971 when women’s football officially joined the KNVB. Eight years later, the girls were allowed to participate.
Another notable development is the dramatic increase in membership over the years. In 1889, the new foundation of the Football Association was 250. Forty years later, that number has grown to over 65,000. And in 1978, KNVB became the first sports association in the Netherlands to cross the legendary number of 1 million members. In 2015, that number was at 1,227,157 affiliates, the highest number ever.

The Johan Cruyff Arena is the main stadium in Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, and has been the home ground of the AFC Ajax football club since its inception. Built between 1993 and 1996 at a cost of 140 million euros, it is the largest stadium in the country. The stadium was previously known as Amsterdam Arena (stylized as Amsterdam Arena) until the 2018-19 football season, when it was officially named after the legendary Dutch footballer Johan Cruyff, who in March 2016 Had passed away.
