Tyler Adams named as United States captain for World Cup 2022

Midfielder Tyler Adams has been named captain of the United States men’s team for the World Cup in Qatar.

The 23-year-old Adams will wear the bracelet when the US opens play in Pool B on Monday against Wales.

Adams, who plays professionally for Premier League side Leeds United, has captained the United States in nine of their previous 32 games. Seven of those games were during World Cup qualifying.

“We are proud to announce that Tyler is the World Cup captain,” USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter said Sunday. “We believe that he has great leadership skills, he leads with his actions and his words.”

Adams is the youngest US team captain to a World Cup since 22-year-old Harry Keough in 1950.

Tyler Shaan Adams (born February 14, 1999) is an American professional soccer player who plays for Premier League club Leeds United and the United States national team.

A homegrown player of the New York Red Bulls academy, Adams turned professional with the New York Red Bulls II as a sixteen-year-old before joining the New York Red Bull’s first team a season later. Adams joined RB Leipzig in January 2019. Adams joined Leeds United three and a half years later in July 2022.

Primarily a midfielder, Adams is capable of playing as a fullback or winger on either side of the defense or midfield.

Adams represented the United States at multiple youth levels before making his senior team debut in 2017.
