José Andrés Guardado Hernández born 28 September 1986) is a Mexican professional footballer who plays as a defensive midfielder for La Liga club Real Betis and captains the Mexico national team.

Popularly known as Principito (Spanish for Little Prince), Guardado came through the youth ranks at Atlas, making his professional debut in 2005 before signing with Spain’s Deportivo two years later, where he spent five seasons. In 2012 he joined Valencia, with brief loan stints at Bayer Leverkusen and PSV, before permanently joining the latter club in 2015 and winning two Eredivisie titles. He returned to Spain two years later with Real Betis, where he has since made over 170 appearances.

A Mexican international since 2005, Guardado represented the country in four World Cups, and four Gold Cups – winning 2011, 2015, and 2019 tournaments – two Copa Américas and two Confederations Cups. He is currently the joint most-capped player in the history of the national team with 177 appearances and tenth on the all-time scorer list with 28 goals.

Atlas

Born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, the son of Andrés Manuel and Teresa (née Hernández), Guardado began playing professionally for local team Atlas, joining the team’s youth system at the age of seven and later appearing in two full seasons of Primera Division. He made his league debut on August 20, 2005, in a 3-2 home win against C.F. Pachuca, and on October 15, he scored his first goal against Tigres UANL in a 2-1 away win. At the end of the tournament, he was voted the best rookie.

On 19 August 2006, Guardado scored his first professional brace against Club América in a 2–0 home win, both coming from long-range shots from outside the box. His performances in his second season led him to win consecutive awards (Apertura and Clausura) for the best side.

Deportivo

Guardado was officially presented on 24 July 2007, and was presented with the number 18 shirt by the Spanish national team. He made his La Liga debut on 26 August in a 3–0 home loss to UD Almerín and on 16 September he scored his first goal against Real Betis, attacking a long throw-in at the far post, in which his attempt was described as a “karate-style finish”, in a 1–0 win.

He finished his first season with 26 appearances and five goals, as Depor finished in ninth position, eventually qualifying for the UEFA Intertoto Cup and subsequent UEFA Cup, where he scored in a 3–0 home win. on Feyenoord in the group stage; he was voted by the fans as the best player.

In the middle of his second year, the fans chose Guardado as the best player of 2008. Coach Miguel Ángel Lotina stated that he was a key player for Deportivo and admired his talent and character. He established himself as the first option, providing several assists and charging set pieces; however, he too was hampered by various injuries.

Valencia

On May 28, 2012, Guardado signed a four-year contract with Valencia CF. He made his debut on August 19, playing 66 minutes in a 1-1 draw against Real Madrid; Two days later, after five years of residence in the country, he obtained Spanish nationality. His UEFA Champions League debut came on 12 September, in a 2–1 group stage loss to eventual winners Bayern Munich. During his first season he regularly played at left back, mainly due to Jérémy Mathieu’s serious injury.

Guardado scored his first goal for Che on May 12, 2013, contributing to a 4-0 thrashing of Rayo Vallecano, and appeared mostly in the backline in the following months. On 30 January 2014, Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen announced that he had signed him on loan for the rest of the season, with an option to buy afterwards. He made his debut for him on 2 February in a 1–0 loss against 1. FC Kaiserslautern for the DFB-Pokal, playing at left back.

Guarda’s playing time at both the Estadio de Mestalla and the BayArena was hampered by injuries and loss of form.

PSV Eindhoven

For 2014–15, still owned by Valencia, Guardado joined PSV Eindhoven, who had previously tried to buy him in 2007. He made his Eredivisie debut on 31 August 2014 against Vitesse Arnhem at the Philips Stadion. On March 15, 2015, prior to the match against FC Groningen and amid rumors of a transfer to AFC Ajax, PSV fans displayed a tifo with the Mexican flag and a banner in Spanish that read “Andrés Guardado, our Mexican Golden Eagle. He has to stay at PSV Eindhoven. Our house is your house, Andrés.” On March 27, PSV announced that he had reached an agreement with Valencia for a permanent transfer, for an undisclosed fee and three years.

Real Betis

Despite rumors linking him to a possible move to Major League Soccer’s Atlanta United and Los Angeles FC, it was announced on July 27, 2017 that the Spanish club Real Betis had signed Guardado for €2.3 million. on a three-year contract. The following month he was named co-captain and on August 20 he made his competitive debut, playing all 90 minutes in a 2–0 loss to Barcelona. He scored his first goal on November 25, in a 2-2 draw at home against Girona FC.

In December 2019, Guardado, 33, renewed his contract until 2022. On 4 July 2020, he made his 100th official appearance for the Andalusians, captaining the team in a 1-1 league draw against RC Celta de Vigo. and becoming the first Mexican. reach that mark for three European clubs in the process. On July 11, he suffered a hamstring injury in a 1–0 league loss to Atlético Madrid, for which he missed the remainder of the season.

Andrés Guardado International career

Guardado made his first appearance for Mexico in a friendly match against Hungary on December 14, 2005, four months after his first-team debut for Atlas. He was then called up to represent his country at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, where he appeared in a 2–1 loss to Argentina in the round of 16, starting as an attacking midfielder/winger alongside Ramón Morales, but was substituted by Gonzalo Pineda after getting injured in the second half; After the departure of coach Ricardo La Volpe, his replacement Hugo Sánchez kept the player on his squad.
