Chuba Akpom Club Career

Arsenal

Six-year-old Akpom joined Arsenal.

He made his Arsenal U18 debut at age 15 and earned his first professional contract a day after turning 17.

Akpom was an unused replacement during Arsenal’s 2–1 Champions League loss to Olympiakos in December 2012.

In 2012–13, he played 20 U21 Premier League games and scored 13 goals, including 10 in the Elite Group. Akpom was selected for Arsenal’s pre-season tour of Asia in 2013–14 and scored once against Indonesia and again against Vietnam. and another against Urawa Red Diamonds.

Akpom made his Premier League debut on 14 September 2013 against Sunderland. He replaced Olivier Giroud in injury time. Akpom made his second Arsenal appearance against West Bromwich Albion in the League Cup on 25 September. He replaced Thomas Eisfeld after 82 minutes, and the game went into overtime 1–1.

Akpom played extra time and scored Arsenal’s third penalty in the shootout, helping them win. In 2013, he scored three goals in four UEFA Youth League games. Akpom hat-tricked in a 6–1 FA Youth Cup fourth-round annihilation of Peterborough United on 6 January 2014. 

Brentford

Brentford, Peterborough United, Leyton Orient, and Milton Keynes Dons were all reportedly interested in loaning Akpom.

Shaun O’Connor, Brentford’s head of recruitment, recruited Akpom while at Arsenal.

The loan was in doubt due to Theo Walcott and Nicklas Bendtner’s injuries in early January 2014, but it was finalized on 9 January, with Akpom signing for a month.   Warburton manager “Chuba is fast and has an excellent first touch. Arsenal-bound

Akpom scored a three-trick for Arsenal in the 2014–15 season opener against West Bromwich Albion.

On 23 September 2014, he made his first senior debut of the season, replacing Héctor Bellern in Arsenal’s 1–2 League Cup loss at Southampton. The First Premier League game of 2015 was against Southampton.

Akpom came on as a second-half replacement and won a penalty that Santi Cazorla converted for Arsenal’s first assist.   On 4 February 2015, Akpom signed a new 4+12-year contract with Arsenal. 

Manchester United

He joined Nottingham Forest on loan until May 31.

Akpom joined Hull City on loan in August 2015.
Akpom scored his first goal for the club in a 2–0 home win over Huddersfield Town on 8 August. Akpom replaced Nikica Jelavic in the League Cup first round against Accrington Stanley.   He scored in extra time and a penalty in the Tigers’ 4–3 shootout win.

Akpom scored his first senior hat-trick in Hull’s 3–1 FA Cup win over Bury on 30 January 2016. He was an unused substitute in Hull’s 2016 Championship play-off final at Wembley. 

Brighton (loan)

Akpom joined Brighton on loan on January 30.

 He made 10 appearances and helped The Albion become promoted.

Sint-Truiden (loan)

Akpom joined Sint-Truiden on loan on January 31.

Akpom scored his first goal against Anderlecht on 17 February 2018.

PAOK

Akpom joined PAOK Salonika on 2 August 2018 for three years.

On 25 August, he made his debut as a substitute against Asteras Tripoli.

On 11 November, he scored his debut goal against Panetolikos 2–1.   BBC reported in March 2019 that Akpom was vital to PAOK’s title bid.   He was an unused replacement as PAOK overcame Levadiakos to win their first Super League title in 34 years. 

PAOK won the Greek Cup Final against AEK Athens thanks to his goal.

On 6 August 2019, he scored against Ajax in a 2–2 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round tie.

He scored his first Superleague Greece goal on September 1 against Panionios.   Akpom opened the scoring in a 1–1 away draw against Xanthi F.C. on 1 March 2020 after receiving an excellent assist from Omar El Kaddouri. His 7th Super League goal came in his most productive year. 

Middlesbrough

Akpom joined Middlesbrough for £2.75m on September 19, 2020. Former Arsenal prospect joined PAOK after impressing in the Greek Super League. Akpom signed a three-year contract with a one-year option. On 26 September, he scored on his Middlesbrough debut against QPR.

PAOK announced Akpom’s loan return from Middlesbrough on August 26, 2021.

On Boxing Day 2022, Chuba scored his first hat-trick for Boro in a 4-1 win over Wigan Athletic at the Riverside Stadium, becoming him the EFL Championship’s top scorer.  Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick confirmed on 5 January 2023 that Akpom had been given a one-year contract extension.

Chuba Akpom International career

Akpom played his first game for England U16s on February 15, 2011, in a friendly against Slovenia. The game ended in a 0-0 tie. The U16s’ second and last game was a 3–0 win over Northern Ireland in the Victory Shield on March 23, 2011. Akpom’s first game with the U17 team was on August 2, 2011.

He scored once in a 4–0 win over the Faroe Islands. England didn’t make it to the 2012 European U17 Championship, but he played in all six games and scored two goals. He played for the U17s 13 times and scored five goals. On September 6, 2012, Akpom played his first game for England U19, which lost 3–1 to Germany.

He scored his first goal for the U19s on September 26, 2012, when they beat Estonia 3-0 in a qualifying game for the 2013 European U19 Championship. Two days later, he scored two goals in a 6–0 win over the Faroe Islands. He played in five of England’s six qualifying and elite stage games for the 2013 European U19 Championship. He scored three goals, but England did not make it to the finals.

On October 11, 2014, Akpom scored his first goal for England U20. He came on as a sub in the 87th minute and scored twice in a 3–2 win over Netherlands U20. Akpom made his England U21 debut on October 13, 2015.

He played all 90 minutes and scored with the last kick as England beat Kazakhstan in a European qualifying match. He scored again for the England U21 team against Switzerland in a UEFA Euro Under-21 Qualifier. England U21 won the game 3–1, and Akpom scored the winning goal in the final seconds of the second half.

Akpom, whose parents are from Nigeria, can still play for Nigeria. In May 2016, it was said that he was one of three players the Nigeria Football Federation formally talked to.

Akpom was recently picked to play for England’s under-21 team against Norway on September 6, 2016, in a qualifier for the UEFA European Championship.

On March 28, 2017, it was said that Akpom and Chelsea player Ola Aina were close to moving to Nigeria after talks with Nigeria Football Federation president Amaju Pinnick.

In September 2019, he said he planned to represent Nigeria abroad. In an interview with BBC Sport, he said this: “It was a choice I made on my own. I’m from Nigeria, and so is everyone in my family. It would be great to represent Nigeria.”
