Daniela Cruz Club Career
Cruz started her career with Sportek de Heredia, where she won the second-division title and moved up to the Costa Rica Women’s Football title.
Later in 2010, she went to the United States to study, where she got to play for the NCAA Division II West Florida Argonauts. In 2012, she won the Division II title with the same team.
After finishing college in 2014, she returned to Costa Rica to play for Deportivo Saprissa FF. In 2014, she won the title with Saprissa. Cruz won the 2015 Apertura with Saprissa, and she took a big step in her career by signing with Red Star Belgrade in the Serbian First League. She has a one-year contract, but she has the chance to extend it.
2016 her grandfather got sick, so she had to return to Costa Rica for three months. In her last game in Serbia, she hurt herself and planned to get treatment there, but the injury was so bad that she had to get an operation with the help of her parents. Red Star Belgrade didn’t renew Cruz’s deal because she hurt herself, so she returned to Costa Rica to play for Deportivo Saprissa FF. As a team leader, she won the Clausura 2018 last year. She was also the coach of Saprissa’s U-13 girls’ team.
Cruz won the Apertura 2019 with Deportivo Saprissa FF before he moved to Spain. He scored an Olympic goal in the final against AD Moravia, which tied the game 1-1, and Saprissa won on penalties.
On June 5, 2019, RCD Espanyol Femenino said on social media that Cruz had signed with them for one season. She will play with Katherine Alvarado, also on the Costa Rica team.
International career
Cruz was called up to the U-17 Costa Rica National Team when she was only 13. This team went on to qualify for the 2008 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in New Zealand. In 2010, she was able to play in the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, which was held in Germany. This was her second World Cup, which Costa Rica won when she was still a very young and talented player.
In 2014, Cruz was already on the adult team, but the Costa Rica Women’s National Football Team qualified for the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time in a game against Trinidad & Tobago. Cruz was a part of that team. Their group was finally ready to show what they had learned, so they did. Even though Costa Rica came in third in their group at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, they played a great game and showed what they could do.
Cruz and her teammates had some ups and downs in 2018 after the Costa Rica National Team made history by winning a silver medal at the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla, Colombia. But later that same year, she was on a team that didn’t make it to the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup after beating Cuba 8–0 but losing to Jamaica and Canada 1–0 and 1–3, respectively.
Cruz is one of Costa Rica’s most useful and important players. She has played in three World Cups.
