Jay Rodriguez Football Career

Here, we take a closer look at his Football career so far.

Jay Rodriguez Club Career

Burnley

At the conclusion of the 2006–07 season, Rodriguez, who had signed a contract with Burnley, was promoted to the senior team after rising through the club’s youth systems and completing a two–year apprenticeship. Out of the seven youth players available at the time, only he was signed by Burnley manager Steve Cotterill.

On December 29, 2007, in Burnley’s 1-0 loss to Bristol City at Turf Moor, he replaced Stephen Jordan as a late substitution and made his first-team debut for Burnley in the Championship. Rodriguez joined Scottish First Division team Stirling Albion in January 2008 and spent the 2007–08 season there on loan. While reporting for Stirling on game days, he continued to train with the Clarets.

He made his Albion debut the next day in the Scottish Cup fourth-round match at Celtic Park against Celtic, which Albion lost 3-0. As David McKenna’s replacement in the second half, he entered the game.

He made his debut against Livingston a week later, but due to exhaustion and poor fitness, he was forced to miss the following six weeks of action. [Reference needed] On March 1, in his first game back, he came off the bench to score a consolation goal and his first career goal away against Morton, which resulted in a 2-1 loss.

He remained with Stirling until the conclusion of the season and scored goals against Livingston and St. Johnstone, but Albion was relegated after coming last in the standings since these goals weren’t enough to keep them up.

Southampton

Rodriguez attracted a lot of interest from Premier League clubs in the summer of 2012, and on May 23, Cardiff City of the Championship reportedly made a bid for Rodriguez. Burnley reportedly accepted a “significant offer” from Southampton, a recently promoted Premier League team, on May 28. Rodriguez agreed to a four-year contract with Southampton on June 10 that was reportedly worth around £7 million.

On the first day of the 2012–13 season, Rodriguez started against Manchester City in the Premier League until being replaced by Rickie Lambert in the 55th minute. On September 25, he scored his first goals in league play for Southampton, with two goals in a 2-0 League Cup victory over Sheffield Wednesday. On October 28, 2012, Rodriguez scored his first Premier League goal for Southampton against Tottenham Hotspur.

In a third-round loss against Chelsea on January 5, 2013, he scored his first FA Cup goal for Southampton. He started the scoring in a 2-1 loss to Manchester United on January 30 at Old Trafford, but Wayne Rooney’s two goals turned the game around. He scored the winning goal in a 3-1 victory over Liverpool at home on March 16. He extended his impressive run of play by scoring in victories over Reading (2-0) and Chelsea (2-1), both of which were at home.

West Bromwich Albion

Rodriguez agreed to a four-year, £12 million contract with West Bromwich Albion on July 2, 2017, a fellow Premier League team. On August 12, 2017, he made his club debut in the opening match of the 2017–18 campaign, a 1-0 victory over AFC Bournemouth. Ten days later, in a 3-1 victory over League Two team Accrington Stanley in the second round of the EFL Cup, he scored his first West Brom goal.

On January 13, 2018, during Brighton & Hove Albion’s 2-0 victory, defender Gatan Bong of Brighton alleged racial abuse from Rodriguez.

West Bromwich released a club statement in support of Rodriguez when the Football Association later judged the allegations to be unproven due to a lack of evidence. Rodriguez scored a stoppage-time equalizer against his hometown rivals Aston Villa in December 2018, but the referee missed the fact that he “had clearly shoved the ball into the net with his hands.” He acknowledged doing it but claimed it was an accident.

Return to Burnley

Burnley re-signed Rodriguez on July 9 for a two-year deal with an initial payment of £5 million and a further £5 million to be paid after the first year. Rodriguez scored all four goals as Burnley defeated Rochdale 4-1 on September 21, 2021, in the League Cup.

Jay Rodriguez International career

Rodriguez’s first call-up to the England under-21 team came in February 2011. He replaced James Vaughan in the 60th minute of a friendly match against Italy‘s under-21 team on February 8, 2011, to make his debut for his country.

Along with Southampton teammates Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana, Rodriguez received his first call-up to the entire England team on November 7, 2013, for England’s friendlies against Chile and Germany. At a friendly encounter against Chile on November 15 at Wembley Stadium, he received his first England cap.
