What is FIFA World Women’s Cup 2023 group draw?

The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 group draw took place on 22 October 2022 at Auckland Town Hall in Auckland, New Zealand. The 32 qualified teams were drawn into eight groups of four.

The draw procedure was as follows:

  • The qualified teams were seeded into four pots, based on their FIFA Women’s World Ranking as of October 2022.
  • The teams were drawn into the groups one by one, with the following restrictions:
    • No group could contain more than one team from the same confederation, except for UEFA, which could have two teams in each group.
    • The hosts, Australia and New Zealand, were automatically drawn into groups A and B respectively.

What is FIFA World Women’s Cup 2023?

The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 is the ninth edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, the quadrennial international football (soccer) championship contested by women’s national teams organized by FIFA. The tournament will be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand, and is scheduled to take place from 20 July to 20 August 2023.

It will be the first FIFA Women’s World Cup to have more than one host nation, and also the first senior World Cup to be held across multiple confederations, as Australia is in the Asian Confederation, while New Zealand is in the Oceanian Confederation.

In addition, this tournament will be the first to feature the expanded format of 32 teams from the previous 24, replicating the same format used for the men’s World Cup from 1998 to 2022.

The opening match will be contested between New Zealand and Norway at Eden Park, Auckland on 20 July 2023. The final will take place on 20 August 2023 at Sydney Olympic Stadium in Australia. The United States are the defending champions, having won the previous two (2015 and 2019) tournaments.
