Guillermo Ochoa Club Career

América

Leo Beenhakker called up 18-year-old Guillermo Ochoa for América’s Clausura 2004 match against Monterrey. Ochoa rapidly showed his expertise and talent in goal and replaced Adolfo Ros. After his injury, he shared starting duties with Ros. He won Rookie of the Tournament after his first season.

Guillermo Ochoa was considered Ros’ heir apparent before Apertura 2004 began. Oscar Ruggeri brought new goalkeepers, including Sebastián Saja. Ruggeri’s tenure was marked by controversy and unfavorable decisions. Ochoa was reinstated by Mario Carrillo after only six games. After that, he started every Club América game, barring injuries or national team action.

Under Carrillo, Ochoa won América’s Clausura 2005 title. He won the 2005 and 2006 Campeón de Campeones with América. Back-to-back Golden Gloves in 2006–07. Ochoa was one of just three non-European players on France Football’s 2007 Ballon d’Or list. Ochoa started 2008 in great form, helping América win the InterLiga tournament.

Guillermo Ochoa saved a late penalty kick and América’s 1–0 lead against Monarcas Morelia. Various English publications speculated in 2010 where Ochoa might play in 2011–12. Manchester United reportedly wanted Ochoa. Last season, América lost in the quarterfinals to Monarcas Morelia.

Ajaccio

On 4 July 2011, Ochoa signed a three-year deal, with an extra one-year option, with French club Ajaccio, freshly promoted to Ligue 1. Bordeaux and Real Sociedad defeated Ajaccio 1–2 and 0–4 in his first two friendlies. Ochoa made his official club debut on 5 August 2011 against Toulouse, losing 0–2.

Ajaccio won two games in a row with Ochoa preserving two clean sheets, his third of the season. Ochoa contributed to a 3–0 Coupe de France win over Étoile Fréjus Saint-Raphael. On 14 January 2012, he helped Ajaccio beat Auxerre 2–1, and on 21 January, he helped Ajaccio beat Valenciennes 2–1 to move out of the relegation zone.

Ajaccio beat Dijon 2–1 in Ochoa’s sixth game. Ajaccio needed a win against Toulouse to avoid relegation. Ochoa played 90 minutes as Ajaccio beat Toulouse 2–0 to stay in Ligue 1. Ochoa had 8 shutouts, 43 saves, and 151 blocks in his rookie season.  He concluded the Ligue 1 season with 59 goals surrendered, tied with Alexis Thébaux of Caen. Fans elected him as the Season’s MVP.

Málaga

On 1 August 2014, Guillermo Ochoa signed a three-year contract with Málaga. Carlos Kameni was Javi Gracia’s first-choice goalkeeper despite Ochoa’s preseason involvement.  Ochoa’s debut game for Málaga was a 1–1 draw against Deportivo de La Corua on 3 December.

Three days later, he was on the bench for the same team’s league encounter. Early November rumors linked Ochoa to a £4 million transfer to Liverpool.

Despite rumors and Mexico manager Miguel Herrera expressing discontent with their first-choice goalkeeper receiving minimal playing time, no move had materialized by the conclusion of the January transfer window, with Málaga glad to retain Ochoa, calling him “a professional.”

Granada (loan) 

On 22 July 2016, Granada confirmed they had acquired Ochoa on a season-long loan. He made his league debut on 20 August in a 1–1 draw against Villarreal.

In April 2017, it was stated that Ochoa would be a free agent at the end of the 2016–17 season. Ochoa conceded his 79th and 80th goals in a La Liga loss to Osasuna on May 13. Salamanca’s Ignacio Aizpura set the record in 1995–96 with 78 goals.

Ochoa made 162 saves across Europe’s top five divisions, but Granada was relegated with only four wins. Granada’s supporters voted Ochoa Player of the Season after he played every game.

Return Americas

Guillermo Ochoa, the third-choice goalkeeper, was listed on the team’s roster to compete at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, but he did not receive any playing time. Additionally, he was called up for the 2005 Gold Cup, but he saw no action.

Gold Cup, suspicions of doping

Ochoa, along with four other members of the Mexico national team, tested positive for the drug Clenbuterol during the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

All players were later found not guilty by the Mexican Football Federation, and the results were attributed to meat contamination and clenbuterol ingestion was deemed to be unintentional.

However, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

FIFA World Cup 2014

During their 2014 FIFA World Cup group stage encounter versus Brazil, Ochoa was in action. Ochoa was named to Mexico’s 23-man World Cup roster on May 9, 2014. On June 13, Mexico played Cameroon in its opening game, in which Mexico won 1-0.
