2010s
The Ivory Coast qualified for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa and drew again in a “Group of Death”, against five-time champions Brazil, Portugal, and North Korea. Ivory Coast won 3-0, but Portugal drew 0-0 with Brazil, and Ivory Coast was eliminated once more in the group stage.
2014
The team made a third appearance at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, where they were drawn in Group C against Colombia, Greece, and Japan. After coming from behind to beat Japan 2-1, Côte d’Ivoire lost 2-1 to Colombia, leaving their ranking in the balance. In their last game against Greece, the score was 1-1 before stoppage time, and with Japan losing 4-1 to Colombia, Côte d’Ivoire looked set to qualify.
However, in the 93rd minute, Giovanni Sio committed a penalty which was converted by Georgios Samaras, giving Greece the victory and the place in the round of 16; The Ivory Coast, meanwhile, came out in the group stage for the third consecutive tournament.
