The Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium also called Kaloor Stadium in Kochi, Kerala, India, is a stadium that can be used for many different things. The stadium has a capacity of 60,000 spectators. For Indian Super League matches, it is restricted to 39,000. People say that the stadium was one of the loudest places in the world to watch an association football game.

The stadium has hosted several international cricket and football matches, but after 2014 it did not host any cricket matches due to the ISL. Large exhibitions, film events, and political rallies in the city take place on the stadium’s huge grounds. The most innovative aspect of the stadium is its unique 2kW floodlight light towers which, when fully switched on, can provide lighting levels for HDTV broadcasting. The tower structure is itself unique in India.

The Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) rented the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kaloor to the Greater Cochin Development Authority for 30 years.

The stadium acts as a home for teams including the Kerala Cricket Team and Kerala Blasters FC (Indian Super League). The stadium is privileged to have the fifth loudest crowd (128 db) in the world, during the final match of ISL 2016 where Kerala Blasters played against Athletic Kolkata.

Kochi was one of the six host cities for the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup held in India. As of 19 August 2017, the stadium has hosted 10 ODIs.

Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium History

The Kaloor Stadium was originally built as a cricket stadium. But since Kerala is one of the few places in India where football is a popular sport, it was also used for football games. In fact, in a match between India and Iraq in 1997, approximately 100,000 spectators filled the venue, overcrowding it, which is still a record at this venue.

This was at the Nehru Cup International Football Tournament in 1997, which was the first tournament at the venue. The stadium won several laurels for being built at the right time. The stadium was completed under the watchful eye of the late V. Joseph Thomas IPS, who was the head of the Greater Cochin Development Authority.

He was a big fan of football since his college days at St. Thomas College, Palai, and also served as a patron of the Kerala State Athletics Association. The stadium was inaugurated by the then-President of India Shankar Dayal Sharma in 1996. It is 1.3 kilometers in outer circumference.
