About Mali National Football Team
The Mali national football team represents Mali in men’s international football and is governed by the Mali Football Federation. The team’s nickname is Les Aigles. They represent both FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
While Mali is a youth football powerhouse both in Africa and the world, they have never qualified for any senior FIFA World Cup final in history. They have qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations 12 times.
Mali National Football Team History
Mali reached the final of the 1972 Africa Cup of Nations but lost 3-2 to Congo. They did not qualify for the final again until 1994, when they reached the semi-finals, an achievement that was repeated in 2002, 2004, 2012, and 2013.
They played their first World Cup qualifying match in 2000. As part of CAF’s 2002 World Cup qualifiers, Mali lost in the preliminary round to Libya. Two years later, the country hosted the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations.
Mali’s under-23 team managed to qualify for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Greece. The team led by Cheick Kone managed to reach the quarterfinals of the Olympic tournament before losing to Italy.

Mali National Football Team Home Stadium
Stade du 26 Mars is located in the southern suburbs of Bamako, Mali. It serves as the home of the national football club Stade Malien and is the national stadium. It has a capacity of 50,000 as an all-seater stadium. Built in 2001, it is named after the date of Martyrs’ Day (Mali), a national commemoration of the Bamako uprising of March 26, 1991, that overthrew the dictatorship of Moussa Traoré. The stadium, built by China Overseas Engineering Group, served as the venue for the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations.
