Matt Lowton Football Career

Here, we take a closer look at his Football career so far.

Matt Lowton Club Career

Sheffield United

Lowton was born in the Derbyshire town of Chesterfield. After playing for Leeds United for a while, he joined Sheffield United when he was fifteen. He worked his way up from the youth team to the reserve team, switching from being a full-back to a central defender along the way.

After getting first-team experience on loan at Sheffield FC in 2008, Lowton went on loan to Sheffield United’s sister club in Hungary, Ferencváros, in January 2009, along with another reserve player, Sam Wedgbury. The next month, he played for the club for the first time in the Hungarian League Cup. He played twenty times for the club.

Back in the Championship, Lowton was on the edge of the first team. He made his Blades debut in a 1–1 draw with Cardiff City at the end of March 2010, coming on as a late substitute. He made his full debut for the club in the last game of the season.

The next year, Lowton started Sheffield United’s first game of the season, which was against Cardiff City, but he was given a straight red card. Even though this was a setback, he got back on the first team and got a new contract at the end of September.

Lowton kept coming on as a sub for United, and in mid-October, he scored his first goal as a senior player in a 3–3 draw at home with Burnley. Lowton played regularly for the rest of the season and scored four goals, but that wasn’t enough to keep the club from being kicked out of the league.

The Blades were in League One at the time, but Lowton was still a key player. In August 2011, he was given a new contract, and he played 55 times and scored six goals for the Blades the next season.

Aston Villa

Lowton moved to Aston Villa in July 2012 for an undisclosed amount, thought to be around £3 million. He was Paul Lambert’s second signing as Villa manager, and his first game was on August 18, 2012, against West Ham United in the Premier League.

Lowton scored his first league goal for Villa on September 15, when they beat Swansea City 2-0 at home. Lowton signed a new four-year contract with Aston Villa on July 19, 2013. This will keep him there until the summer of 2017.

Burnley

On June 22, 2015, Burnley signed Lowton to a three-year deal for a price that has not been made public but is thought to be around £1 million plus add-ons. Lowton played his first game for Burnley on October 20. He came on as a substitute in the 84th minute against Nottingham Forest.

On December 19, he made his first start against Charlton Athletic. On January 12, 2016, he scored Burnley’s fourth goal in a 5–0 win over Milton Keynes Dons. This was his only goal of the season. In his first year at Burnley, Lowton played in 27 games, all of which were in the League. During that season, Burnley won the Championship and moved up to the Premier League.
