Over the years, the club has earned a reputation for having one of the best academies in England. Several players who have marked the history of football such as Bobby Moore, Rio Ferdinand and even Frank Lampard have thus made their classes within the West Ham Academy.
The Hammers have a very strong rivalry with Millwall, generally considered the club’s main rival, but also with Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, two big clubs in the capital.
West Ham has played their home games at the Olympic Stadium in London since 2016. Scottish David Moyes is the club’s manager and England’s Mark Noble is the captain.

West Ham United History
The Beginnings (1885-1961)
In 1895, the club was founded as Thames Iron Works FC, the club changed its name in 1900 before opting to become a professional club. In the initial seasons, the team grew in lower divisions. The team played one season in the London League before joining the Southern League D1 in 1898. The first home matches of the club took place at the “Memorial Grounds” in Plaistow. After numerous disagreements over the management of finances at the team, Thames Iron Works FC was disbanded and changed to West Ham United Football Club within a matter of days.
Syd King was appointed in 1902 as the club’s first official coach. In the following years, the club relocated to Boleyn Ground. Boleyn Ground in 1904 and was there for nearly 100 years. The stadium was situated in the close vicinity to West Ham, in the district of Newham east of London. After several seasons in lower divisions, the Hammers were fourth in their local championship at the conclusion of the 1914-1915 season and joined the League with the 2nd division as the championships returned following the First World War.
FA Cup final in 1923. We can see Billy his white horse that brought the spirits to life at the final.
The first game of the season was a match in a 1-1 draw against Lincoln City. After three solid seasons in which the club finished in seventh after which they moved to fifth, fourth consecutively and then fourth, the team was promoted into the top division of 1923, after being second on the table to Notts County and took part in the first FA final in the following year. Cup was played in the history of the club was played with Bolton Wanderers. The final, which was the first time it was played at Wembley and is referred to in the media as “The White Horse Final”. The number of fans at the stadium is estimated to be approximately 200,000. Many of them were forced to leave the pitch due to there being no seating in the stadium. The police intervened in an attempt to get the order back as well as the picture of Billy the big white horse owned by an officer was etched in my memory. The final was the team winning 2-0 for Bolton. Over the next decade, Bolton was able to remain in the top division, but they would be eliminated in 1931.
Syd King, who has been at the club since 1902, is exiled from the club. Then he was suffering from severe psychological issues as a consequence of being relegated and taking his own life in 1933.
The former manager, Charlie Paynter, who knew the club well and had been in various positions from 1897 to the present and was chosen to succeed him. Paynter played for 18 years on the bench with the Hammers but failed to bring them back to the top league. The club was transformed in the year 1950 when he replaced Ted Fenton who succeeded in getting promoted to the first division.
Thanks to the influence that was made by Malcolm Allison on the pitch, Fenton managed to build an elite team and lay the foundation for the club’s many future successes.
The Greenwood era and golden period (1961-1977)
The most successful period of the club’s history started in 1961 when Fenton had been replaced by the former Chelsea defensive player Ron Greenwood. In the immediate aftermath, Greenwood relies on the employees of the club like John Bond or Ken Brown in addition to a few youngsters that were trained by the club, such as Geoffrey Hurst, and Bobby Moore, and was appointed club captain at the age of twenty, and Martin Peters. Despite somewhat disappointing league performances at the club’s inability to climb above eighth, Greenwood helped the Hammers win their first major trophy in their history when they won 3-1 in the final at Wembley in the FA final against Preston North End in the FA final Cup and a short time after, the club was awarded its inaugural Community Shield in its history (an award shared with Liverpool).
The team was selected for the European Cup Winners 1964-1965 Cup due to their triumph at the FA Cup, West Ham was first defeated by La Gantoise then Sparta Prague in the initial round of the tournament. The team was in opposition to the Lausanne-Sport team in the quarter-finals The Greenwood team displayed its offensive power and prevailed in both games 6-4 in order to advance to the fourth round. Greenwood then beat Real Zaragoza to qualify for the first European final in its history.
There, it was scheduled to play Munich 1860 at Wembley. The final at Wembley in London is similar to an at-home game for the club, which is played in front of around 98,000 fans, and won 2 -0 against the Germans due to two late goals scored by the winger Alan Sealey. Greenwood will be awed by the team’s effort and especially the performance of Moore whom he would claim was his player’s finest game. The champions of the past, West Ham failed to keep their trophy, and they lost in the semi-finals of the 1966 edition of the Cup against the final champion, Borussia Dortmund. They also qualified for finals in the League Cup final, but Greenwood and his players were unable to claim the fourth trophy over the course of three years. They fell 6-3 to West Bromwich Albion.
The team became increasingly competitive, and the three stars of the team, who had been training there, Bobby Moore, Martin Peters, and Geoff Hurst, became members of the English world champions in 1966.
To increase the team’s efficiency, Greenwood decided to strengthen the core of the team by promoting Frank Lampard Sr and Trevor Brooking, particularly in addition to adding Billy Bonds from Charlton Athletic. Martin Peters left the club in the year 1970, and in 1972, Hunt was the turn to leave for Stoke City. The striker was emulated in the following year by Bobby Moore, a living legend from the Boleyn Ground side, who later became a member of Fulham.
When 1974 came around, Greenwood took the choice to step down from his role as coach for the team to become the general director of the team. He also hires Assistant John Lyall to lead the team. The team’s success was instantaneous and the Hammers were once more winners of their FA Cup, this time beating Fulham by a score of 2-0. The victory is what makes West Ham the last club to win the trophy, with a team made entirely made up of English players. In the year 1976 Lyall led the team to another Cup final, but the Londoners lost 4-2 to Belgian club Anderlecht.
Ups and downs (1978-1992)
This loss in the final was the start of the downfall of West Ham. The club was dropped back to the second division by 1978, however, Lyal was in charge. In the year 1980 the team, which was still at the bottom of the league had won the Cup for the third time against Arsenal. This remains the final major trophy for the club. The sole goal of the match came from Trevor Brooking. This feat is more remarkable because West Ham remains to this day the only non-resident team of the first division that won the tournament.
The following year, the club made it to the quarterfinals of the Cup Cup but saw their journey end with an aggregate loss of 2-4 to Dynamo Tbilisi. The following year the club was returned to the English Premier League and managed to be in the top ten for the first three seasons following its return to the top league. The 1985-86 season was more difficult for the team. It was managed by Lyall with 16th place in the final standings. However, in the 1985-86 season, the club had the most successful season it has ever had in the league when it finished third, which was last Liverpool as well as Everton. The Hammers fall four small points to be a mere four points behind the Reds.
The next few years are even more disappointing. The club was not able to stay on top in the league and was even cut off at the close of the 1988-1989 season, just three years following the superb third place they achieved in 1986. Head coach John Lyall, although in the position for 15 years, was then removed from his position in June 1989, and was succeeded by Lou Macari. Maccari is only expected to stay for a couple of months at the Boleyn Ground prior to resigning. Maccari will be placed at the side of Billy Bonds, one of the most revered legendary players of Boleyn Ground. The club finished second on the list in the second division, at the close of the 1990-1991 campaign, Bonds managed to raise his favorite club in the English elite. However, the club will yet again be in danger of being relegated next season following a disappointing 22nd position
Premier League debut (1992-2016)
The Hammers thus fall into the second division on the anniversary of the debut year of the Premier League. The club is able to get back to the top by being second at the top of the table in the championship. The climb appears to be the correct choice for the club, which is now able to stop making the leap between divisions. In 1993 the Hammers lost the most famous player they had ever had after the passing of legendary Captain Bobby Moore and a few months after that, in 1994, Bonds quit as manager, and was replaced with Harry Redknapp. One of Redknapp’s most important moves was bringing forward Tony Cottee, who had shined in the blue and claret colors in the 1980s, returning with the team. Cottee’s first appearance at the club was off to a decent beginning. The striker is an effective attack pair along with Trevor Morley.
In his first season as a bench player for the club, West Ham, which was seen by everyone as again fighting to be relegated was able to complete the success they had hoped for in 1993-1994 by finishing thirteenth in the table. The next exercise follows a similar vein since the Hammers finished in a comfortably fourteenth position and have a significant role to play for the championship race as their 1-1 draw at the Boleyn Ground with Manchester United deprives the Red Devils of the title and also crowns Blackburn Rovers. The team’s performance is positive despite a less strong team on paper than many teams competing in the title race.
Redknapp relies on a strong defense that is made consisting of former players from this Club Alvin Martin and Steve Potts and also their Czechoslovak goalkeeper Ludek Miklosko. In 1995, after the ruling of the Bosman Judgment that year, the club no longer had to favor British players as part of its roster and was able to bring in new foreigners. The likes of Florin Raducioiu as well as Paulo Future arrive in east London. But, both of them won’t be able to establish themselves as a player in England as they will eventually be seen as a major disappointment.
The club also saw during the winter of 1996 the arrival of Croatian defensive player Slaven Bilic. The 1995-1996 season was positive for the club, and they continued to climb up the ranks and finished tenth the best result in 10 years. The next season, however, began with a lot of difficulties, Cottee was absent and a number of important players were admitted to the hospital, which stopped the club from making strides in the rankings. The only bright spot at the beginning of the season was the rise of two promising players for the future of English football: Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand. Conscient of the necessity to increase the squad and improve the quality of the players, the management is active during the winter months on the transfer market, particularly signing 2 scorers John Hartson and Paul Kitson. The second phase in the campaign is better and the team is able to stay out of relegation finishing 14th, just two points clear of maintenance.
Despite the departure of Billic who was later promoted to defense boss, before leaving the club to join Everton The following season was favorable for the team. Redknapp alters his formation and switches to a 5-3-2. Hartson is able to build a strong squad with 15 goals, and Lampard, as well as Ferdinand, become team managers. The Hammers ended up finishing eighth their highest score since the inception of the Premier League and reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. But it was 1998-99 that will be remembered as one of the most memorable seasons from the Harry Redknapp time.
The club is growing stronger thanks to the addition of veteran forward Ian Wright. However, the beginning of the season has been disappointing however, the management chooses to back Redknapp which is still strengthening in the transfer window of winter by signing players like the Italian Paolo Di Canio as well as the Cameroonian Marc-Vivien Foe. West Ham then surprised during the second quarter of the season, and ended with a remarkable fifth position in the league, being able to participate in the UEFA Cup. In the same season new England player Joe Cole, considered a talent made his debut at the club.
In spite of having to hold onto their Lampard as well as Ferdinand Nuggets West Ham had to confirm the season 1999-2000. But, injuries were numerous and led to the season becoming more complicated. Di Canio was in remarkable form, however, the club was defeated in round two of the UEFA Cup by Steaua Bucharest and was only ninth in the league. But the Hammers have crowned winners of their first trophy, the Intertoto Cup, which was the second European trophy they have ever won in their history.
The next season will be more complex. Affected by another set of injuries, the team had a difficult beginning in the campaign. Ferdinand was transferred to Leeds United in January 2001 and the new players such as Davor Suker, and Christian Bassila struggled to keep up. The relations between Redknapp as well as the management have been strained and the players at Boleyn Ground finish in a disappointing 15th place in the league championship. In the spring of 2001, Redknapp was dismissed from the Boleyn Ground shortly after and was followed a few months following by Frank Lampard.
Glenn Roeder then arrives at the club to take over Redknapp. In 2003, even though the team had a good seventh spot during the previous season the club was then relegated to the bottom for only the second time in over 10 years. Roeder is then let go of the club and replaced by Alan Pardew. After being relegated, the Hammers must sell their star player Joe Cole, who joins Lampard at Chelsea. However, the club manages to keep its second gem player in the midfield Michael Carrick, but, being unable to return immediately to his former club in the Premier League, will be forced to sell the player to Tottenham Hotspur during the summer of 2004. It’s not until 2005 that West Ham will be able to discover the best players. West Ham qualified in extremis for the play-offs following finishing in sixth. The club thwarted Ipswich at the quarter-final stage. The team then won 1-0 against Preston North End thanks to a goal scored by Bobby Zamora.
In their debut season since their return to the top division, West Ham managed to get to the Cup final for the first time in the last 26 years. After taking a 2-0 lead, and then three goals in the final minute of time in the final, the Hammers were defeated in the final by Liverpool Reds on penalties after an intense game. Pardew later left the club and became replaced by Alan Curbishley.
Move to Olympic Stadium and a new era (2016-)
The first game of Pellegrini’s time as a bench player for the Hammers was the shambles of losing 0-4 to Liverpool. The season’s start is a bit tense as the team suffered four consecutive defeats in the opening. Although there was a slight improvement afterward, however, the team is not up to par and is unable to achieve better than tenth in the league standings.
The disappointing start to the season is not going to stop the club from releasing the checkbook for the market of transfers. Around 100 million euros have been yet again distributed to attract players like Sebastien Haller Pablo Fornals and Jarrod Bowen to the London Stadium. But, the team did not make it into the league, and after just five wins at the beginning of the campaign, Pellegrini has been dismissed. David Moyes returns once again in the interim capacity and manages to be successful in the rescue mission.
In a position where a coach was not available the management took the decision to extend Moyes. In the wake of the pandemic’s impact on the economy, The club has a better idea when it comes to trading players. The only notable transfers are Algerian forward Said Benrahma and Czech internationals Tomas Soucek (whose loan is transformed into an acquisition) along with Vladimir Coufal. The season’s opening game was impressive, and the team made an amazing comeback in the derby match with Tottenham Hotspur, managing to secure a 3-3 draw despite losing 3-0 with just a quarter of an hour left.
With a solid defensive base and a strong direction by Declan Rice who is gradually succeeding the veteran skipper Mark Noble and by the offensive capabilities that are displayed by Michail Antonio, who has been replaced in the middle by Moyes The team has enjoyed an excellent season and overcomes all odds, to earn an opportunity to qualify for the Europa League, notably by finishing ahead of two of its biggest opponents, Tottenham and Arsenal.
The transition of The transformation to London Stadium finally seems to be complete and, as we approach the start of the season 2020-2021, supporters have united in praising the achievements that were done by David Moyes, whose contract has been extended until 2025.
2021-
On the 26th of August 2021, West Ham was drawn into Europa League group H, alongside Dinamo Zagreb, Genk, and Rapid Wien. 2021 ended with West Ham sitting fifth in the Premier League, having reached the fifth round of the EFL Cup and winning Europa League group H. West Ham won their first three matches of 2022, bringing the club up to fourth within the Premier League. On the 10th of March, 2022 West Ham lost 1-0 to Sevilla in the Europa League round of 16 and a 2-0 extra-time victory just seven days later earned West Ham’s participation at the top of the Champions League. European quarterfinals, for the first time since forty-one. years. On 14 April 2022 after a 1-1 draw a week before in the London Stadium, West Ham defeated French club Lyon by 3-0 on the pitch at Parc Olympique Lyonnais to set the Hammers’ first European semi-finals since 1976.
The match was played against the same team they faced in the European Cup semi-final of the Winners’ Cup, Eintracht Frankfurt, the Hammers were exiled from this year’s Europa League after a 3-1 defeat against Germany’s German team. At the end of the 2021-22 Premier League season, West Ham secured a second consecutive campaign of European football by getting into the UEFA Europa Conference League after finishing in seventh place.
The 2021-22 season is also notable because it was Mark Noble’s last season as the West Ham player, with the midfielder stepping down after 18 years of being a first-team player at the club. The club made 555 appearances across every competition, scoring at least 62 times. After finishing seventh in the 2021-22 Premier League, West Ham was able to participate in the 2022-23 Europa Conference League entering the play-off stage.
West Ham United 2024-25 Home Stadium
West Ham’s former home ground is the Boleyn Ground, commonly known as Upton Park, in Newham, East London, with a capacity of 35,303 spectators.
The club was chosen to own the London Olympic Stadium at the end of the London Olympic Games in 2012, according to a decision by the Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC), after a vote in which Tottenham ended up defeated.
London Olympic Stadium
The decision made room for the board to adapt the venue (reducing the capacity from 80,000 spectators to around 57,000), but without destroying the athletics track, a detail that was essential for West Ham to win the dispute against Tottenham for the new stadium. , taking over the new stadium in 2015 and making it their home stadium in 2016. In December 2018, West Ham increased the capacity of their playing stadium to 60,000.
Following this decision, political discussions motivated by the interests of other clubs attempted to reverse this decision, but it was reaffirmed on 22 March 2013.
West Ham United 2024-25 Kit
A story has suggested the possibility that Thames Ironwork’s right-half Charlie Dove received the Aston Villa kit from William Belton who was an elite sprinter with notoriety across the nation and was also part of the coaching team of Thames Ironworks. Belton was at the fair in Birmingham near Villa Park, the home ground of Aston Villa, and was challenged to race against four Villa players who bet money on which one would take home the prize.
Belton beat them, and after they failed to pay for the bets one of the Villa players responsible for washing the team’s uniform offered the whole squad’s “football kits” to Belton as a form of payment. Aston Villa player subsequently reported to his club that the kit was “missing.” The issue is frequently disputed.
Thames Ironworks, and later West Ham United, retained the blue/clear yoke design however, they used their previously preferred colors for their away kits.

In order to increase their stake to 60 percent, they announced they would open shares for fans to purchase. On August 9, the 9th of August, 2010 Gold and Sullivan increased their shares to 30.6 percent each, with “minority investors” (which included the former manager Terry Brown, who bought an additional 3.8 percent of the club for a price of a little over 4 million) and left Iceland Straumur Investment Bank owner of 35 percent of the team.

Main Rivalries
West Ham has major rivalries with several other clubs, particularly with various London clubs, the biggest rivalry being with Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, and the most significant and longest-running rivalry is with their neighbor Millwall because each club, West Ham and Millwall have their roots. within the steelworkers’ regions of their respective River Thames and Millwall ironworks regions. They were being a part of the same team since they resided in the same communities.
This rivalry between West Ham and Millwall has always been a source of violence and is among the most famous sports hooligans in history.
A non-municipal rivalry is with Sheffield United, due to the claim of this club the fact that West Ham loses points in the Premier League, due to controversial decisions, such as signing Carlos Tevez. Argentine footballer Carlos Tevez. In April 2007 the FA sanctioned West Ham PS5.5m for an agreement that permitted third-party influence (an act that was deemed unlawful within the English Premier League) and tried to conceal the existence of the contract in the contract. which resulted in Tevez along with Javier Mascherano. They were brought from Corinthians that brought Javier Mascherano and Tevez to Upton Park. After West Ham was fined and dropped points, their struggle to remain within their place in the Premier League began, defeating Wigan by 3-0.
In their last nine games, West Ham has won 21 points, and won seven of these. Sheffield United have won just two of their last nine games, with one winning West Ham 3-0 at home in order to take an advantage of five points to this point and then lose it by the opposition in the next round.
Sheffield United’s defeat of 2-1 against Wigan in the final round was the final straw that sealed their demotion. However, West Ham won 1-0 against Manchester United, with Carlos Tevez scoring the only goal of the game, securing their place within the Premier League and adding to the tension in that relationship.
This decision from Sheffield United created the recent rivalry between the two clubs.
