The Mestalla Stadium is a football stadium in Valencia, Spain. Valencia Club de Ftbol’s headquarters, the stadium has a capacity of 49430 seats, making it the eighth largest stadium in Spain and the largest in the Valencian Community.
The name of the stadium comes from the historic Mestalla irrigation canal, which used to be in front of the south stand and had to be jumped over to get to the stadium. The north stand of the stadium is known for its very steep section.

Mestalla Stadium History
On May 20, 1923, Valencia CF and Levante UD played a friendly match to open the Mestalla Stadium. The new stadium could hold 17,000 people, but that number was raised to 25,000 four years later. During the Civil War, Mestalla was used as a concentration camp and warehouse. Only its structure would be maintained since the rest was an empty lot without terraces and a gallery damaged during the war.
During the 1950s, Mestalla was renovated, resulting in a stadium with a capacity for 60,000 spectators. It was severely damaged by the flood of October 1957 when the Turia river overflowed its banks. The stadium soon returned to its operational use with some more improvements, such as the incorporation of artificial lighting, and it was inaugurated during the 1959 Fallas festival.
