Naomichi Ueda Early Life

Born in Uto, Kumamoto, Japan, Ueda started playing soccer when he was in the third grade of elementary school. Ueda then attended Sumiyoshi High School in Uto City and Otsu High School in Kumamoto Prefecture. While in high school, he started out as a forward but switched to a center-back position. Ueda was impressed by manager Kazunori Hiraoka, who described him as “very rare material in Japan”. Ueda himself spoke about his development and his play in the central position. He also became the captain of Kumamoto Prefecture’s Otsu High School.

His performance in high school attracted J. League clubs, such as Urawa Red Diamonds, Yokohama F. Marinos, Kawasaki Frontale, FC Tokyo, Nagoya Grampus, and Kashima Antlers. On September 4, 2012, it was announced that Shoji would be joining the Kashima Antlers effective January 1, 2013.

Personal life

Growing up, Ueda did Taekwondo when he started in second grade after his parents recommended it and he continued to practice. However, Ueda stopped taking lessons after entering high school to focus on his football career. He said that he idolized Carles Puyol.

Club Career

Kashima Antlers

Ueda made his first-team debut for the Kashima Antlers in the J. League Cup on March 23, 2013, against F.C. Tokyo in which he started and played the full 90 minutes as Kashima lost the match 4-2. Two months later, on May 22, 2013, Ueda made another appearance for the team, starting the entire match, in a 2–1 loss against Cerezo Osaka.

He later played a role against Sony Sendai in the Emperor’s Cup second round on 7 September 2013, setting up the club’s first goal of the match, in a 3–0 win. However, Ueda found his first-team opportunities limited in his first season at Kashima Antlers and he appeared as an unused substitute for most of the season. At the end of the 2013 season, he made three appearances for the team in all competitions.

Cercle Brugge

On 12 July 2018, it was announced that Ueda will be moving abroad for the first time in his career by agreeing to join the Belgian First Division A club, Cercle Brugge. The move was confirmed, as he signed a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee. On joining Cercle Brugge, club president France Schotte said: “Ueda is a defender who has already gained a lot of experience as a basic player at Kashima Antlers, the best Japanese team. With his discipline, boundless commitment, and footballing potential, Ueda as The Japanese international is a real asset for Cercle Brugge!”

Loan to Nîmes

On 18 January 2021, Ueda joined Ligue 1 club Nîmes Olympique on loan until the end of the season. The deal includes an option to buy.

International career

Youth career

In July 2010, Ueda was called up to the Japan under-16 team for the first time during his time at Otsu High School in Kumamoto Prefecture. He made his Japan U16 debut on August 6, 2010, and helped the team beat the United Arab Emirates U16 1-0. Later in 2010, Ueda was called up to the national team for the AFC Under-16 Championship in Uzbekistan. Ueda started the tournament well when he scored for Japan U16 in a 6-0 win against Vietnam U16 on October 25, 2010. Ueda helped Japan U16 progress through the tournament before being eliminated by North Korea U16 in the semifinals.

Senior Career

Two months later, it was announced that Ueda was called up to the national team by manager Javier Aguirre in place of Atsuto Uchida ahead of the AFC Asian Cup in Australia. However, he appeared as an unused substitute throughout the tournament. After this, it was not until May 7, 2015, that Japan coach Vahid Halilhodžić called Ueda up for a two-day training camp. For the next two years, he was called up to the national team, appearing as an unused substitute.

In December 2017, Ueda was called up to the national team for the EAFF E-1 Football Championship as the host. He made his debut for Japan on December 13, 2017, starting the entire game, in a 2-1 win against China. After the match, Ueda talked about his debut in Japan and said that he wanted to leave early. However, his second appearance for Japan saw them lose 4–1 to South Korea in a decider, resulting in the opposing team becoming tournament champions.

In May 2018, Ueda was named to Japan‘s preliminary squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Eventually, he made the final cut of the 23-man team. However, he was unable to make an appearance at the World Cup and said: “My goal is to become a player who can perform at the world level. My desire to develop only intensified while watching World Cup matches from the bench.”

After the World Cup, Ueda was not called up again until he was included in Japan’s preliminary squad for the Copa América in Brazil. He started all three matches, playing in the center back position, as they were eliminated in the Group Stage. After the game, Ueda apologized to the team. Despite this, Ueda played four of the remaining six games of 2019 as he helped Japan keep three clean sheets.
