The transfer fee was not officially disclosed, although it was reported that Everton paid Rangers an initial £5.5m, with further payments potentially taking the total value to £11m. After being signed by manager Rafa Benítez, who was soon sacked, Patterson’s career at Everton got off to a slow start, initially playing for the under-23s rather than the first team.

This trend continued for the entirety of the 2021/2022 Premier League season, with Patterson not making any Premier League first-team appearances despite the club’s high hopes for the player. These limited opportunities for Patterson were due, until April, to the team wanting to give Patterson time to adjust to the pace and frenzy of the Premier League before giving him a full debut.

However, Nathan Patterson was unable to play from 10 April onwards due to an ankle injury sustained in Everton’s final training session before playing West Ham on 3 April. This ankle injury required surgery and ruled Patterson out for the rest of the season.

Patterson was named as a starter in all three of Everton’s pre-season games before the start of the 2022/23 season. Throughout the pre-season, he managed a total of two assists, both in the match against Blackpool (Vitaliy Mykolenko’s goal in the 6th minute and Dele Alli‘s goal in the 64th minute). Patterson’s positive preseason performances earned him plaudits from both his coach and former players.
