About Sampdoria

Unione Calcio Sampdoria, commonly known as Sampdoria is an Italian professional football club based in Genoa.

The club was formed in 1946 from the merger of two existing sports clubs whose roots go back to the 1890s, Sampierdarenese and Andrea Doria. Both the team name and colors reflect this union, the former being a combination of the names, the latter taking the form of a single uniform design, predominantly blue (for Andrea Doria) with white, red, and black bands (for Sampierdarenese ) along the center of the jersey, hence the nickname blucerchiati (“blue circle”).

Sampdoria Home Stadium

The Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris, also known as Marassi after the name of the neighborhood where it is located, is a multi-purpose stadium in Genoa, Italy. The home of Genoa C.F.C. and U.C. Sampdoria football clubs opened in 1911 and is the oldest stadium still in use for football and other sports in Italy. In addition to football, the stadium has hosted rugby matches for the Italian team and, more rarely, some concerts.

Sampdoria Kit

The club crest features a sailor in profile known by the old Genoese name of Baciccia, which translates as Giovanni Battista in Italian or John-Baptist in English. The image of a sailor is appropriate given that Sampdoria are based in the port city of Genoa. The precise design of the Baciccia came from a Disney-licensed comic published by Panini, Topolino, in 1980. Since 1980, the Baciccia has appeared on Sampdoria jerseys, mainly on the chest, but occasionally on the sleeve.
