San Mamés is an all-seater football stadium in Rafael Moreno Pitxitxi Kalea, Bilbao, Spain. Inaugurated on September 16, 2013, the stadium replaced the “old” San Mamés as the headquarters of Athletic Bilbao.
With a capacity of 53,331 seats, San Mamés is the 7th largest stadium in Spain and the largest in the Basque Country.

San Mames Stadium History
The formal opening of Estadio San Mamés, often known as “La Catedral,” took place on the 21st of August 1913 with a match between Athletic Club and Racing Club de Irun, who had won the Spanish championship the previous year. Rafael Moreno “Pichichi” put the team on the board with the first goal.
The initial capacity of San Mamés was 7,000 people, but the venue rapidly increased in size over the course of the following decades.
The 1950s marked the beginning of several substantial changes, the first of which was the construction of a new main stand. The most distinguishing feature of the new platform was an arch that stretched the length of it from end to end.
The construction of two brand-new stands at the extremities of the stadium progressed throughout the 1960s. The stadium was finished being built in the early 1970s when a new stand was constructed to take the place of the uncovered terraces that had been there up to that point.
As a result of being chosen as one of the playing locations for the 1982 World Cup, Estadio San Mamés was subjected to an entirely new set of renovations and refurbishments. Both ends were reconstructed, and they were attached to the main stand, which maintained its arch on the summit of the structure. It is now possible to accommodate up to 46,000 people, the majority of whom will be seated.
During the World Cup, San Mamés served as the venue for three games in the first stage of group play.
After then, the stadium only went through a few modest renovations, one of which being turning it into an all-seater venue.
The passage of time had left its imprint on the stadium, and Athletic Club made the decision to construct a new stadium right next to San Mamés because of this. The opening of this brand-new stadium, which is also known as San Mamés, took place in September 2013. A few months before, the previous San Mamés had been torn down and rebuilt.

In 2018, La Catedral hosted the Challenge Cup and Champions Cup finals, the most important club rugby tournaments in Europe, and was chosen by UEFA as one of the 12 venues for Euro 2020.
