Terence Kongolo Football Career

Here, we take a closer look at his Football career so far.

Terence Kongolo Club Career

At age 8, Kongolo became a member of Feyenoord. Kongolo got his first professional deal with the team in June 2010 after rising through the ranks of the under-16 and under-17 side. Prior to the 2011–12 season, he was promoted to the first team a year later, and at the same time that he was playing for the reserve team, he made an appearance on the substitute bench. He didn’t make his managerial debut under Ronald Koeman until April 14, 2012, when he entered as a substitute in a 3-0 victory over Excelsior. This turned out to be his only appearance of the season and at the end of the 2011–12 season, he signed a contract extension, keeping him until June 2015.

After much rumor surrounding his future at Feyenoord, Kongolo agreed to a five-year deal with Monaco, the current Ligue 1 champions, for an undisclosed transfer fee, which was reportedly in the neighborhood of €12 million. Upon his arrival, he was given the customary number 4 center defender jersey, which was most recently worn by Fábio Coentro in the 2015–16 campaign. Kongolo finally made his Monaco debut on October 13 in a 3-2 domestic loss to Lyon after being left out of the squad for a number of games.

He featured in just two more games for Monaco during his brief stay, both of which were victories over Rennes (by a score of 2-1) and Angers (by a score of 1-0), meaning that he missed nearly two months of domestic football. He did, however, manage to make one appearance during their UEFA Champions League campaign, playing in a 5-2 loss to Porto as well as a 2-0 Cup de la Ligue victory over Caen and a 2-1 Trophée des Champions loss to Paris Saint-Germain.

Shrewsbury Town

Kongolo moved to play football in England on January 2, 2018, agreeing on a loan deal with Premier League team Huddersfield Town with the intention of a permanent transfer provided Huddersfield escaped relegation. On January 13, he made his club debut by substituting in a 4-1 loss to West Ham United.

As Huddersfield prepared for their second season in the Premier League, Kongolo signed with the club permanently on June 8 for an unknown club record sum. In a crushing 3-0 loss against Chelsea, where he made his Terriers permanent debut, he was shown a yellow card. In a 2-1 loss against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on December 4, Kongolo went on to score his first goal for the team.

After his future at Huddersfield Town remained uncertain, Kongolo returned to Fulham, who had gained promotion during Kongolo’s loan stint during the second half of the previous league season.

Kongolo signed a permanent contract with Fulham on October 16, 2020, the domestic transfer deadline day, for an undisclosed fee that is thought to be in the range of £4 million to £7 million. On January 9, 2021, he played in an FA Cup game against Queens Park Rangers and made his injury come back.
