Yui Hasegawa Early Life

Hasegawa was born on January 29, 1997, in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. Then, when she was a child, she and her family moved to Todo, Saitama. She went to Meguro Nihon University Junior High and High School for both junior high school and high school. In 2019, she got her degree from Nihon University.

Hasegawa started playing football when she was six because her bigger brothers told her to. She played with boys at first, but when she was nine, she joined a girls’ football club. In 2009, when she was 11, she was accepted into Tokyo Verdy Beleza’s Menina, the best youth school in the country.

Yui Hasegawa Club Career

Verdy Beleza

In 2013, Tokyo Verdy Beleza elevated Hasegawa from the youth team to the senior team. On 23 March 2013, she debuted Nadeshiko League against FC Kibi IU Charme at sixteen. Despite her youth and inexperience in the first squad, she became a frequent starter in midfield.

Her senior football breakthrough came in 2015. She scored her maiden Nadeshiko League goal against Iga FC Kunoichi on 23 September 2015 and helped the squad win the championship after a five-year hiatus. Hasegawa played during the club’s most successful spell. She won five league crowns, five Empress’s Cups, three League Cups, and the inaugural AFC Women’s Club Championship in eight seasons with Beleza. In 2018 and 2019, Beleza won the domestic triple crown.

Hasegawa made his Nadeshiko League Best XI debut in 2017. She achieved that feat in 2018, 2019, and 2020 before leaving Japan to play abroad in 2021.

On 3 May 2018, in a scoreless draw against Nojima Stella Kanagawa, she surpassed 100 league appearances for Beleza at 21. She scored 40 goals in 217 appearances for the club.

AC Milan

AC Milan signed Hasegawa on January 29, 2021. She scored two in her Milan debut, including one straight free-kick, in a 6–1 win over Pink Bari on 27 February 2021. She was also the Player of the Match. Hasegawa helped AC Milan finish runner-up and reach the 2020-21 Coppa Italia final in half a season in Italy. She scored three goals in nine games.

West Ham

West Ham United signed Hasegawa for two years in August 2021. On 3 October 2021, she assisted the first and scored the second in the club’s first Women’s Super League win over Manchester City, 2–0. Man City

Hasegawa joined Manchester City in September 2022. Her arrival coincided with a significant team turnover that saw numerous prominent players retire or transfer. After Keira Walsh left for FC Barcelona, Gareth Taylor used her as a deep-lying playmaker at Manchester City.

Hasegawa soon became a crucial starter and helped the club go 16 games unbeaten in all competitions after signing. On 16 October 2022, she scored her first club goal in a 4-0 win over Leicester City. She made her international debut at the 2012 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Azerbaijan, starting against Brazil in the group stage and Ghana in the quarterfinal. Hasegawa scored two goals against New Zealand in Japan’s 1–0 quarter-final loss, ending her maiden international competition.

She was called to the U-20 national squad for the 2013 AFC U-19 Women’s Championship at 16, accelerating her development.

Hasegawa played in the 2014 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica after the U-20 team failed to qualify. She started all six matches in Japan’s incredible championship run. Hasegawa made her senior debut for Japan as a half-time replacement against Spain at the 2017 Algarve Cup. She scored twice in Japan’s 2–0 triumph over Iceland the following match.
