Steffen was added to the bench twice by Freiburg II, but did not make it to the squad with the reserve team until the following season.

On August 1st, 2015 Steffen made his debut for the Freiburg reserves , making his debut against 1. FC Saarbrucken; he kept the score at 0-0 in a draw that was 0-0. He scored his first win with the club on the 26th of September, marking his fifth appearance, with the 2-0 win over SV Saar 05 Saarbrucken.

Columbus Crew SC

Steffen was back in his home in the United States on July 22 in 2016, signing as a player with Major League Soccer club Columbus Crew SC as an exploratory signing. While he previously played with the Union Academy, however, the club did not have enough training hours at Philadelphia to be considered a Homegrown player and was never offered an extension with the Union. Steffen was a part of the Crew following the third goalie Matt Pacifici had his season been shattered by concussions.

But he was still lagging behind Steve Clark and Brad Stuver on the depth chart. after a brief appearance as a bench player on The Crew, Steffen was sent on loan to United Soccer League club Pittsburgh Riverhounds on the 13th of August.

The loan was made on an individual basis and was for the rest of the season of 2016. Steffen was made Riverhounds debut on the same day, making six stops in a 2-1 win over Bethlehem Steel FC, and went on to make nine appearances throughout the calendar for Pittsburgh. Steffen was also named on the bench 3 times in the course of the Crew without ever making an appearance.

Starter in Columbus

In the lead-up to the 2017 season Steffen was selected as the team’s goalkeeper starting position after beating Stuver along with Logan Ketterer to win the position. Steffen made his debut for the club in the opening game of the season with two saves in a game in the match against Chicago Fire. He refused to quit the job and started every single game of the regular season with the Crew and led the team towards the MLS Cup Playoffs berth after not making it to the finals in 2016.

In the process, Steffen recorded the most saves of his career in two games: with Orlando City on August 19 and against New York City FC on 22nd October. In the knockout phase in the 2017 MLS Cup Playoffs, Steffen “had the game of his life” against Atlanta United. He saved eight shots over an hour of regular time and extra time. He also made two saves during the shoot-out when the Crew advanced 3-1 after penalties. Steffen played 39 times during the season, but The Crew were eliminated from the finals of the conference by Toronto FC.

In the summer of 2018, Steffen had been the recipient of an $3.9 million bid by English team Bristol City; the Crew declined the offer but stating that replacing Steffen in mid-season “would have been difficult, if not impossible.”

The news was made public on the 9th of July of this year that Steffen would be taken for a loan by Fortuna Dusseldorf in the Bundesliga for the 2019-20 season. Dusseldorf director of sports, Lutz Pfannenstiel, noted that Steffen was the “perfect example of a modern goalkeeper” when he explained that he was scouting for the player since his time as a goalkeeper at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.

In the beginning of the season, Steffen’s talents were praised and his performance at Dusseldorf was classified as “outstanding”. Then, Steffen was the first player to start the club’s 17 games but was struck by an injury in his tendon patellar, which was a major reason he was out during this Bundesliga winter break as well as the COVID-19 pandemic’s stoppage.

In the process of returning to full fitness and preparing to recover from injuries, Steffen suffered another knee injury which prematurely put an end to his campaign.  Steffen scored the second-highest number of saves after the third-worst defense in the league prior to his injury. It was speculated that Dusseldorf could have escaped being relegated had it not been due to his injury.
