Derek Cornelius Early Life
Cornelius was born in Ajax, Ontario, to a Barbadian father and a Jamaican mother. Cornelius started playing when he was selected to the 1996 House League All-Star team. He was then selected by the Ajax Thunder under-8 at age six. The next season he was the most valuable player for the Unionville Milliken Challenge Cup champions. The next year he moved to North York Spartacus and reached second place in the Indoor League. The next season in the U11 he won the C.O.V.I. Championship and was proclaimed Most Valuable Player.
In 2012, he played the Copa Oviedo with PFC CSKA Moscow of Spain, then played the Copa de la Leche with CSKA Moscow of Northern Ireland where he led the team scoring four goals in the tournament. He ended that year being invited to the CSKA Moscow Reserve Camp and playing in the provincial and regional men’s under-21 leagues, scoring 22 goals in 30 games.
In 2013, he was selected for Canada’s U-17 national team for camp in Florida and Costa Rica, and then selected for the CONCACAF U-17 World Cup qualifying precamp in Florida. He was also selected for the Canadian U16 national team for the Torneo delle Nazioni tournament in Italy. That same year he was invited to Hungary for trials with Nyíregyháza Spartacus FC and Győri ETO FC in March.

Derek Cornelius Club Career
In January 2014 he moved to Germany. He started training with the VfB Lübeck U19 team. He spent two seasons with the main team, but was unable to play due to FIFA’s rules for underage players. He became eligible to play from January 1, 2016.
With VfB Lübeck he won the Schleswig-Holstein Cup two years in a row and made one appearance in the 2015-16 Regionalliga Nord.
In the summer of 2016 he signed for VfR Neumünster playing with them the first half of the season.
Javor Ivanjica
During the winter break of the 2016–17 season, Cornelius was signed by FK Javor Ivanjica of the Serbian Super League after successful trials.
He made his league debut on April 29, 2017, in an away game against FK Radnički Niš. Javor’s head coach Srđan Vasiljević converted Cornelius from forward to centre-back.
Vancouver Whitecaps
On January 18, 2019, Cornelius returned to his native Canada and signed with MLS’s Vancouver Whitecaps FC.
He made his Whitecaps debut on March 2 in his 2019 MLS season opener against Minnesota United. Cornelius scored his first goal for the club on May 18 against Sporting Kansas City.

In July 2021, the Whitecaps announced that Cornelius had been loaned out to Greek Super League side Panetolikos until December 2022.
